How common is bio diesel at the pump? I havent seen it in sydney, but havent exactly searched it out. Only for councils and other organisations who buy it for bulk onsite use.

have a few friends that are running there trucks-travel homes on bio fuel.
some running filtered cooking oil. runs good fair bit of fucking around with pipe and tank heaters etc. No know side effects after a lots of trips up and down the east coast.
some are refining used oil to make fuel that can be put in a regular fuel tank and used as per the norm. However the methonol from this process eats fuel pumps alive. So the fuel needs to be aired before use to get rid of the methonol.
there are plenty of forums on this google away for more info. if you do not have the time to search this then you probally do not have time to run bio fuel it takes a bit of reasearch and time to get a good set up working well.

Anything is possible, it just comes down to time and money.

Re: Biodiesel
Mods? none necessary, it's diesel. Squeeze it hard enough and it goes bang. Let me add a caveat re: seals. Latest standard seals seem fine. Standard filter is fine. Swapping to bio results in a major clean out of the fuel system (lines, tank etc) hence filter blockages are a common experience until all the dino crap is gone.Nissanman wrote:Has anyone had any luck making their own biodiesel? I've got a TD42, any idea what sort of mods have to be done other than filters? Thanks.
Luck has little to do with making BD; it's a well documented (and precise) process. Home made bio is not that time consuming in terms of time doing the business. Process is quite long though. For example, I set up 20 litres of raw ingredients to filter over night. Time to set drum on bench, position filter setup and collection tank; maybe 5 minutes. 12 hours later, filtered oil is ready for next process. Saturday morning, start 200 litres heating in solar collector - 10 minutes. 12 hours later, heated oil ready for next process. Bit of this, bit of that, settling for 7 days, washing, settling for 14 days - ready to use.
Old dude I know starts batches of 200 litres a day until he has 12 months supply for his early nissan HOS then he packs the stuff away and lives the life until he needs more fuel. Retired, so the time is actually a great way to spend a day or two or a week.
Another guy I know does 1000 litres at at time and recovers (distils) the methnol from the waste. Costs him 18 cents a litre going into his 2H Toyota. All the stuff going in to his truck has settled for at least 8 weeks. Has now done more than 600,000k in his standard 2H on home made BD (runs a long haul business).
In sum, truck mods necessary are nil; setting up to do the process is a big deal and quite time consuming. Finding feedstock is also a buggar if you want to recycle used or waste oil because it requires running around and sometimes sucking up to the local fish and chip man (woman).
Although I think some of the earlier replies are a little harsh, if you don't have the time to do the research (reading), I suspect you will find the time to make homemade is beyond you.
Cheers

Toyotas, Engels, and old dogs have never let me down.
All the waste veggie oil around here was accounted for a long time ago. Farmers and commercial operators have been collecting and making their own for years (only in recent times they have to pay for it now) so us back yarders have no chance of getting any. I refuse to buy the slightly cheaper bio from SAFF here cos I know the condition of their underground tanks so all I can do is keep adding my FuelX Diesel additive to each tank of BP. Its worth the 5 bucks a shot to treat 140lts to get 11.5 lt per 100 in my TD42 turbo GQ. Thats with 35's and std 4.1 diffs too.

another knobhead trying to make a fortune out of telling you how to make bio.macca81 wrote:scintexbiofuels wrote:biodiesel is simple to make at home with the right processor kit. Let me know if you need more details.
how insightful... clearly with input like that, i can see why a 12 month old thread was re-surfaced...
depends, do you intend to inject yourself with the biodiesel and run your patrol on meth??mkpatrol wrote:scintexbiofuels wrote:biodiesel is simple to make at home with the right processor kit. Let me know if you need more details.
Will it affect my meth lab???

I looked into it seriously last year when diesel was $1.50+/L, did hours and hours of reading, browsing websites.
Got to the point where i got a few empty drums from work to build a system, and started to collect the equipment, found a supplier of methanol.
collected and filtered about 60L of vege oil, lined up where i could get caustic soda from...
THEN
fuel prices dropped 40c/L, and i gave up. You have to be dedicated to produce biodiesel, its a time consuming process, and unless you have REAL easy access to cleanish used oil, then it takes time and dedication to pickup the oil, filter it, and go through the whole process. titrate each batch. etc etc etc.
in the end it was just too much effort.

me and a mate went thru the exact same thing, got it all together and ready to do, then fuel price dropped to where it was cheaper just to go to the servo again....revhead307 wrote:I looked into it seriously last year when diesel was $1.50+/L, did hours and hours of reading, browsing websites.

not sure how an engine would run on methamphetamine... methanol on the other hand...

I'm surprised you guys haven't found making biodiesel cost effective. I pump out 150L batches for around $50. The cost savings makes the small amount of effort collecting oil well worth while.
I've bought a few things off this Scintex business, pretty good to deal with, they've got some nice gear. I can't say I agree with their sprooking techniques

70 series ute
only reason it isnt cost effective for me is that there are 2 blokes in the area that have the monopoly on oil collection, and as such i cant collect the oil from anyone except them now... which they sell clean at $1 a litre. meaning that at best, i can make it for $1.30/l

While on the topic of cheap oil, i have a new 200Lt drum of WVO sitting in the shed if anyone is keen to get into biodiesel. PM me if you're interested.
I was in the same boat as macca and revhead, but just wasn't cost effective enough - plus i couldn't afford the time. We even stopped running our farm car on WVO, now just dino juice.

Ultrasonic reactor
Fully automated or manual system
Home put together or retailer bought
I want to get a fully automated, dry wash with ultrasonic reactor but the only place i have seen anything decent like this is America and after you import them the fuel cost savings are negated for quite a few years excluding repairs and maintenance to the system.

The reason is because you are not paying excise on the fuel & the government is missing out on revenue
sooo.... why are so many running homemade bio in there diesels?

I got a processor from scintex biofuels. Not sure what you mean by automatic. I just turn the pump on and set the timer, come back the next day and its seperated.
As far as feasibility, i go to work each week for $28 an hour. Takes me 3-4 hours to make $200 of biodiesel including collection time...makes sense to me. Although it might not be worthwhile for you over paid tradies

Actually if you aren't charging yourself excise and declaring it on your tax in Australia it is tax evasion and you can be done for itbullfrog wrote:Lucky we don't love in England as it is illegal to make your own bio diesel over there.

You are not legally allowed to sell it to anyone either, unless you have a licence and are adhereing to the quality standards.
