So what happens when all the car manufacturers stop production in Aus?

Will there still be import duty on Imports or will the big 4 or 5 still get concessions claiming their OS manufactured cars are strictly for the Aus market?

However, I think a 1995 will be the later model with the K6A motor. I believe there was one workshop in Sydney that could compliance this model but nobody else, however, since the RAWS changes, you won't get one now. AFAIK.

Zega, the company that brought them in new (and brought in ours second hand) has a K6A engined one, ABS, alcantara interior, power steer etc and they can't do anything with it. They've had it for about 10 years now and it just sits at their shop. They can't get a compliance plate.

Steve.
sooo why they stop allowing to import it???
hmm i guess i'll just go looking one for around here
cheers

Little Johny and his pro-active facilitation of "Corporate powers"!

You guys really don't know the big picture. Little Johny will never be short of a buck till the day he dies. He made sure of that!

Importing from japan has the same issues as importing from any other country of the world.

Im with Bogged, the answer is here:

http://www.infrastructure.gov.au/roads/ ... index.aspx

No need for any more questions. It sort of thing annoys me when people start bagging things that they dont understand. People bag the government for trying to hide things but in reality its just that people are too stoopid or lazy to go looking.

Also the second hand import policy was changed in 2000 or 2001, the 15 year old rule was changed in 2004-5. If you search you will be able to find the info.

Please explain a few things to me then. These are prices I saw when in the US about 6 months ago. Why do we pay so much for cars.

New F150 $13,000 (aus price $150,000)
New Dodge Ram $9,000
New BMW 318i Coupe $34,000 (aus price $130,000)
New BMW 6 Series Coupe $75,000 (aus price $180,000)
New Range Rover $48,000 (aus price $150,000)
New Ford Mustang V6 $16,500 (aus price $90,000)
New Aston Martin DB9 $109,000 (aus price $350,000)
New Bentley Continental GT $70,000 (aus price $250,000)

Second hand cars were even cheaper:

2005 Mercedes C Coupe $24,000
2002 Lexus SC430 $23,000
2002 Audi TT $18,000
2003 Nissan 350Z $13,000

have you people ever stopped to think how many cars BMW, Mercedes, Chev etc etc etc would sell in the US? Their population is 10 times that of ours.

You're missing the fact that it's not just a 'car' the companies need to build, it's also all the dealerships, the service centres, the spare parts support. All of this is done on a smaller scale down here, so it costs more against each car sold

Posted: Tue Jun 17, 2008 2:02 pm
by g35me
10 times the population, 10 times the dealerships, 10 times the overheads, same amount of profit per unit sold.......

buying in bulk= discount= cheaper cars

the LCT in aus doesnt help prices either

Wish I could buy things in bulk and get them for 1/3 the price of the rest of the world.

Are you aware that the price of an item has very little to do with the cost of its production and EVERYTHING to do with what the market will pay for it.

So, According to "Social Security Online" the average wage in the USA for 2005 was $35,448.93.

The average male wage in Australia is $55,800 per annum (in 2005 as well)

However, in something like 13 states in the US, there's no minimum wage AT ALL.

Most US employees only receive 2 weeks annual leave per year, and the cost of medical insurance is crippling. Effective take home pay is much lower than here when medical, housing costs etc are included.

Odds are, if you can't afford a Bentley in Australia on your current wage, you wouldn't be able to afford one doing the same job in the US either.

Have a look at the price of cars VS average wage in scandinavian countries. Our cars are pretty cheap.

Steve.

I could buy a 600sqm block of land on a lake in the US within walking distance of the ocean in a gated community of 25 houses for $34,000us, what does water front land in australia cost. I can also buy 2 acres in Malibu (Los Angeles) with ocean views for $900,000 ($1million AU) when 1 acre in Berwick of all places costs $500,000 so 2 acres in Berwick should be $1million. Where would you rather have land in Berwick or Malibu as per square meter its the same cost.

Lets be realistic our average wage should be at least $106,000 p/a to compare with US prices as they seem to pay 1/3 what we do, and dont even get me started on how cheap fuel is over there compared to here.

I havnt read the whole thread, so forgive me if I am posting what someone else has, but my understanding is you can import newer car provided they were now available here in aus, that means different engine, different body etc, so a gu swb can be imported, as can say a GQ safari (hitop) there may be a way to bring in a factory GQ diesel auto?
