It's hard to describe… closest description I can think is it's like 'Marbles bouncing around in a big jar being rolled down an incline'

Actually, yes, the sound is quite a but like glass on glass when you think about it - it's dull, not like marbles in a paint can.

It can be quite hard to hear when it's mild. Imagine a kind of random "pitter patter"of "tink" noises - that's how I'd describe it.

The first time I ever heard pinging I described the noise as 'rustling leaves in the engine bay'… my mechanic had a bemused look on his face and thought I was taking the p#ss. It wasn't until he drove the car (a VC crummydore many years ago) he realised what it was.

There may have been some shaving/decking of the head, don't think it would have been much though.

It would'nt take much, especially if the head has been off at an earlier stage of it's life. I used to service a lot of these engines back in the late 80's early 90's when they first came out, and they had pinging problems back then. I found it was caused by excess carbon build up in the combustion chambers. It sounds bodge, but the quick easy fix is to open the throttle up whilst it is running and very slowly pour about 500mls of water down the carby. Pour it too quick and you'll drown it and stall the engine.
I would only use the above remedy if it is pinging under power (acceleration).
From what you describe, it sounds like it's pinging under cruise conditions, which does sound like a carby leaning out problem.

i get a kind of a very mild backfire on deceleration. sounds like its coming from the exhaust. kind of like sounds like the V8 supercars when they decelerate. its this normal/will it cause damage if its not. the enigne is a 1.6 efi

Is your exhaust still standard, or do you have a "sports" exhaust? How bad is the backfiring, like key banger style noise, or just a small pop/fizz on over-run.

They can gurgle a bit on overrun if you have an open exhaust. If its stock, I'd say you have a problem.

Both Zooks I've had with Extractors and Sports Exhausts have gurgled/ popped on deceleration. I imagine most cars with modified exhausts would do this. Many years ago my previous Zook let off a loud exhaust bang once while in the middle of Fremantle. Scared the sh1t out of my old man who said "WTF was that?"

Yeah but a G16B efi shouldn't as it should be running on closed loop on light throttle/deceleration.

I've heard plenty of cars running on closed loop that do the fully sik exhaust burble uleh. Is my G13B closed loop cause it does it
