so lighting up 29" tyres on tarmac with a 10 spline diff isnt idiotic lolo jokes,

I agree that driving like a dickehead breaks things, but driving conservativly after the first 24 spline rear broke, and after 2 more rears and a front break, you do kind a get over it, they had disc brakes and coils in the 70's, why couldnt they engeneer some stronger diffs, that would have been nice.

Testing is never idiotic. :D

What size tyres were you running?

first two rears were on 29"s then the front and 3rd rear were on 32"s, and had been on a beach trip one with the 32's and the rear diff broke driving down mooloolabah esplanade in traffic on a sunday and the fron started making awful noises doing 6o clicks through coolum and then just broke and spat bits of the spider gears through the front of the housing. I have a full service history and the cars only done 230k so i would have thought they were in good nick, putting an arb in the rear, just have to wait till they send me the righ tone grr.

So you did the front centre, was the rear a centre or a shaf that blew?

I've recently gone 24 spline for the reason of interchange as well as shedding 250,000km of wear. Everyone makes 24 spline axles and difflocks but 10 spline are rocking horse poo.

Big difference in strength looking at a 10 spline diff and 24 spline side by side. The spider gears teeth are webbed togther on the 24.

ive never broken a shaft or cv yet, all have been the centre's, the spider gears seem to disintegrate and strip like i've never seen b4, the front, the cross pins snapped then made a mess of everything else.

Stock later model 24 spline shafts are not any stronger than stock 10 spline shafts. This is due to Rover making them out of cheese. So, typcally, 10 spline axles break the center (pin) and 24 spline break the shafts.

The plus to 24 spline is that you have a lot of room to play in increase in strength with materials alone. http://217.34.53.228:9876/uploads/BILLI ... 0GRAPH.pdf

Back to the OT.... Part time sucks. Full time is so much nicer to drive. I challenge anyone to scientifically measure a change in fuel economy. I have a friend that went part time. After many runs of attempting to keep up with us on gravel roads without killing himself, he really regrets that decision.....

is it possible to get free wheeling hubs for a front end fitted with maxi locker and axles? not going in a rangie, but in a custom hybrid running rrover chassis and suspension, series 2a ute body, shorty tray. Part time toyo transfer fitted to back of th350 on holden v8, so want to get front axle to part time as well.

Cheers guys,
Matt

Why bother, really?
It doesn't sound like a truck that's going to do any serious time in 2wd, so just let the front diff spin from the hubs.

i am building the truck as a dual purpose rig, very capable 4by for pulling out all my mates nissans and tojos, with the possibility of some minor comps, as well as being used as a shooting rig, (fold down windscreen in series ute). I live in melbourne, but my family comes from western vic in the wimmera and i do a lot of fox shooting, protecting the sheep. I will be traveling back and forth between the wimmera and melbourne, about 5 hours, that's why i was asking.
