Nothing a spirited, confident, slightly crazy driver can't overcome. Go through the pics in the "Just Reminiscing" thread and find the pics of Mark H's white Feroza, even when it only had a 2" body lift and 235/75R15 Muddies on it, i think eveyrone who witnessed that thing can say Mark put that Feroza in places a Feroza should not be and if it couldn't go there, it certainly wasn't from a lack of trying. Chuck the supension lift, 31" tyres and welded front diff, and all i can think of is

(and just for the original thread topic, they were a 15x7 Enkei Wheel)

Ah yes, the driving of Mark H. - anyone who witnessed it would agree that the man did not know the meaning of "Back Off !! " :D

Welding the front Diff though does make the whole thing a lot stronger - you basically bring the moving parts back to 2 - the Ring & Pinion gears. As ong as they hold up you are OK. However - as with everything, if you strengthen one part, you just move the weakest part further down the line - & as I'm sure Mark will atest - on the Feroza it is the CV Joints. With the Welded Diff & 31's Mark was able to change a CV in around 40mins go to whoa - he became that proficient at it :D

I'm still trying to find the pics of the 2nd time he tried "the waterfall" - on that trip he busted a CV reverse snatching a Patrol out of mud - changed it in 40 mins at our lunch break - headed to the Waterfall only to break another on the 1st Rock step

See below for the Lunch carnage....actually it wan't always the CV Joint itself - he also had a habit of snapping the axle halfshaft just near the splines....

murcod wrote:Do you remember at all what the weight difference was Mike? From the above you were also comparing a 15x8 steel to a 15x7 alloy?

The problem with most alloys is they're made to look good- not designed for light weight. There can also be a huge difference in tyre weights between different brands that are the same size.

I wish I still had the actual weights - I only remember it was a bit under 30% lighter. I still have the Sunraysias so I will dig them out & weigh them......

Agreed - most alloys are made to only look good. Pays to do your research. Can only say the CSA Magnums are really tough - thought long & hard on my rim choices in going to the 31's & these came out on top in the Cost vs Weight vs Strength vs Looks equation - but like I said, Rims are a personal thing & YMMV.

I know the arguement for steel offroad is that if they get bent you can hammer them back into some sort of shape - agreed. But I also found that Steel will bend before Alloy will Crack - & it takes a hell of a big hit to crack a well made alloy rim.
If I was building a pure built rockcrawler though, then I would probably put Steel Rims on it though.....with Beadlocks

Still haven't 100% decided on Rims for the Surf either - the Magnums were so good on the Feroza I am really tempted to just get them again ( plus the Surf CV's & Front Diff have the same problems as the Feroza with big tyres & wheels ) but then I really like the Black Steel Pro-Comp Rockcrawler Rims as well........too much choice :D
