i cant see WHY you would get rid of the common rail stuff?
Also- How in craps name did they get a set of NON electronic, direct injection injectors to suit the 1KD? theyre a Direct injector, but Common rail- the old 1KZ is an indirect injector?

Ok, a mechanical fuel pump and injectors have been fitted from a 1KZ-T. The ecu, has been done away with, or bypassed. The bore and stroke of a 1KZ-T is 96x103 and so is a 1KD. So in effect the original 1KD is effectively a 1KZ-T now. Fair enough the 1KD had DOHC compared to SOHC for 1KZ-T.
So the question making my head spin is how does he have 160hp from an engine that is now effectively a 1KZ-T, which gives out 125hp?
Probably it's a good idea a Moderator here to move this into a separate discussion, not to spam the one here.
I missed the part with injectors, they are from Mitsubishi Pajero.
Well, your question is more than reasonable, i am afraid i am not technically that deep to answer that. 1KZ-T is 125hp, correct, 1KD is 163hp here. According to people here i still have the power of the 1KD (although in 1KZ coat - turbo and pump) to a greater extent, although not exactly 163, but i have an intercooler on top. Offroad, it is not making presence, or at least i cannot make a difference, driving on highway is the big difference.
Mechanically the engine is tough and very solid. Unlike Y60 RD28T and 1KZ-T on 70 series TLC i've had or used before, where they had temperature problems, the 1KD in far from any.

1KD has 4 valves per cylinder, so how many injectors did you actually install?
As far as power is concerned there is no way you have the original 1KD power or torque, however you should have more than a 1KZ-T. Reason:
" Common Rail (Common rail direct fuel injection ) technology, produces ultra high pressure, 135 mpa (1350 bar), which is about 8 times more than the pressure of the normal fuel injection system within the "common rail" that feeds all four cylinders (older diesel engines have a separate pipe leading from the pump to each cylinder"
I would also like to know have you completely removed the ECU?

3" Exhaust.
Had a very good price for a 3" exhaust and may send the lc there next week.
However, they are telling me no need to fit a silencer box. Is this correct?
Will be a little noisy without one.

i had a full flow muffler fitted to mine when i got the 3" Mandrel, and it was worth it, its got a nice note when you boot it, but isnt too loud day to day running around.

Appreciate if you would post a couple of piccies; mainly muffler and your dump pipe.

Can take more if needed- the dump pipe is a custom one built locally off a flange, and the muffler is just a high perofmance 3" full flow straight thru

Yes, completely.
Regarding power, on road, mine goes faster and better compared to same 70 serie 1KZ (standard) plus intercooler. And the KZ runs pretty fine too.
Offtopic:
The guy i bought the car from now is into another interesting project. He got 73 series as a base, 1KD, again common rail stripped, added turbo and injectors from 1HD-T.
Gears (6-speed) and transfer case from 120 series (which makes it full time 4x4 i guess), front axle from 80 series (reversed) and real axle from 120. Step width is ~ 5mm difference. In this format, the car is unbeatable in the local offroad championship. Suspension is 2" TJM coils and standard shocks from... Range Rover P38...
Body is topchopped to lower the overall height. This is because we have a lot of mountain steep hills terrains...

Yaro, why don't you just use 13bt or 14bt engines?

Thanks they will be usefull. I did not see the dump pipe. Is it there?

i'll attempt to get some better photos of the dump pipe tomorrow- its not too easy to get decent photos of- theres a heatshield that stops you on the wheel arch, you see squat all on the top, and underneath aint much better. But i'll try!

What injectors does a 1kz-te use? Any special type?

Sent my lc for 3" exhaust yesterday. Should have her back on Saturday.
What Shocks?
My lc is like a rocking horse at teh moment and teh shocks are gone. Was hoping to install rnchos but they are not available. So koni?

Koni or Bilstein would be my bet- When my Old Man Emu's die im going to drop billies into my lux. Dads prado runs Billies, and they are awesome.

bilstien or konis, can't really go wrong.
GoToy
i think what u really need is a 1HDT...
1KZ abit underpowered now huh...
As for the exhaust do u plan to split the wastegate hole or together with the exhaust?
I would prefer with a screamer pipe ( wastegate and exhaust pipe) separate if i was to do the exhaust all over again.
have fun modding.

Going for koni.
BG, manifold half hanging off so a good excuse to try out a 3" hehehe.
There was a 1kd-ftv half cut at the chop shop the other week. Now its gone.

theres a 5000km old 1VD-FTV and gearbox sitting in my local 4wd wreckers. Fan to transfer flanges, with ECU and main engine loom, $15K!

Anyone chipped a 1kz-te?
I keep looking at this site:

Finaly installed an intercooler last few weeks and a manual boost controller:
The intercooler sits just behind the front grill, not so large as did not want to restrict the air to the radiator. You can just make it out if you can see the blue pipes.

Only installed, intercooler, wastegate and manual boost controller.
The boost was set a little bit above factory setting, about 0.9 to 1 bar.
I have noticed that when at full boost, 0.9-1bar, the engine feels starved of fuel. So in the short term going to return the boost to factory setting 0.7-0.8.
Has anyone tried a piggy back chip on their 1kz-te? The ones I know that are available in Australia are Eng-Tek and DP. I was hoping to use Vector but they only do for common rail now.

Confirmed, I can't run much above the default factory boost level. Going to drop the boost back down to 0.8bar.
Until I install a tuning chip can't do much but enjoy the intercooler....

Anyone installed the DP chip or the Eng-Tek chip on their 1kz???

Im around....
I kinda cheated and bought a 100 series turbo diesel manual.... Lux is still in the family, but dads bought it off me and tamed it down a bit.. Smaller tyres, no body lift, but same motor. That TD6 motor is awesome!
I dont know exactly WHAT the hilux was running in terms of ECU, but it was dyno tested on 33's with nothing but a 3" exhaust and dump pipe and got 70kw @ wheels on 33's.. and most people are telling me with driveline losses in a 4wd thats over 100kw@ flywheel!
Never got around to installing a chip on mine. but out of the halfcut (1993 Surf KZN130) it ran 11.5-12psi all the time!

I have been wondering why I ever bothered with a 1kz, should have went 1hzT, awsome engine.
A surf gy has ordered the DO tuning chip for his 1kz so will await feedback once its installed.
Iam presently running at 12psi boost and there seems to be no issues.

Sod the 1HZ-T, I went the whole hog and got a cruiser with the 151kw/430Nm 1HD-FTE

That would cost too many arms and legs here...top priced vehicles and they never see offroad.

ferrit wrote:Dump Pipe:
The stock cast dump pipe off the back of the turbo is REALLY restrictive. As in taking a leaf blower and putting a garden hose adaptor on it levels of restrictive. It hinders the turbo flow, so it takes longer for the turbo to spool up and it doesnt spool up as low in the rev range. Theres a few options to fix it- EngTek make a dump pipe for a KZN130, but theyre asking $500+ for one now i believe, and its probably not suitable for your application- Surfs are all IFS and the off the shelf dump pipes are designed for that, not solid axles.
A quote from Ferrit in another thread, transferred here.
When I had the intercooler added a few weeks back I asked the shop to do the dump pipe too. This shop is more of a track car plac eand has recently gone into doing hilux, d-max type vehicles...just for some history.
When I collected the vehicle the dump pipe was still stock. The tuner's point was the output size of the turbo itself is too smal to warrant installing a 3" dump pipe. So he advised keeping the original dump pipe size as any bigger would not be benificial due to the turbo output size.
However, I always read on forums that the turbo dump pipe is an improvement.
This tuning shop has done hilux vigo and d-max dump pipes as the actual turbo outlet is big.
A friend on mine is checking his spare 1kz-te turbo so I can tell you the size soon, of the output hole.

i think you will find the main reason is direct injection
1kz the z stands for indirect injection
1kd the d stands for direct injection (hence the need for 1HDt injectors)
correct me if i am wrong

what we need now is a aftermarket controller for the variable vane turbo
