wont work otherwise...
Dont need lockers Just two wheel winches. Assuming open diffs - Using two, one on each side of vehicle. Whatever the tension on the rope is on one side, will equal the other side, if both wheels are slipping easily in mud.

cant get tacho or cruise to work, and it shits me not having either.
If everything was working fine, I'd masturbate more, as its fuckin awesome offroad as it is right now... I just have little confidence in anything that was done to it by "team awesome"...

there was a thread on EO yrs back, the bloke from bush winch went and did a demo at a club, and it wasnt all rosey... infact, people were leaving apparently before he finished and he didnt sell any!
but if it makes ya happy
PS, I agree with grimbo on the ruts, some of the ones I've been stuck in, dynamite would struggle to break it up...
I went to the 2005 GC 4wd show, had a guy using one of these and he was showing off to the SES.
I was standing near the 4-5 SES guys watching, well laiughing about this guy.
They were basicly saying this has been done since the 60's-70's and they wouldn't ever use it as a viable winch not even if there was no other option as they thought it was too danguors.
These were the problems they seen with this type of winch.
The rope not holding and letting go right next to the 4wd.
Letting go on a hill, etc.
The winch wheel breaking off or binding up the main wheel.
The rope binding up on the wnich wheel.
The rope going under another wheel.
The winch pulls on 1 wheel which pulls the 4wd off in a angle.
The rope rubbing against another wheel.
Plus more stuff
They didn't say this stuff to the guy though just walked away about 2/3rds of the way through.

Bruce, that's no good.
Since i put the manual in mine the cruise doesn't work either. I think i can fix it though. To get the starter motor to crank, i had to put a jumper on two wires so the ECU thinks it's in neutral.
All i need to do is fit a switch, (bit of a pain though) so that i can select the jumper that makes the ECU think it's in Drive for cruise to work, and back to neutral so i can start it.

I see this as a major flaw.
if you dont have your "winch minder" on the front (or back wheel if pulling in reverse) how are you going to make sure the rope feeds onto the drum properly ?
It is very reasonable to assume that catastrophic failure could ensue without warning.

Not one comment on the ATV youtube video.
What about the guy lifting his quad in the air.
A bit risky i know.

Easier.

My issue seems to spool when going backwards, that you will end up with a mass bunch of rope on one side, which could be a bitch, specially if its a long winch (100ft or so)
If you could work out how to have a "guide" that spreads the rope across it may work... but again his winches are straight.... it seems easy to get tangled.
anyway try it, its been done and people buy those things... but they buy Hiclones too..

how do you get around cross axleing with open centre diffs if you are only able to winch off one wheel?
The idea is to use two wheels in most cases.
If you are only lightly stuck. (not deep mud etc) and you have lockers you could fit to one wheel only, like the youtube video on ATV wheel winches.

i didn't know "lightly stuck" and "lockers" went in the same sentence? haha
i like it mate, i think it is a pretty good idea, thinking about it now, you could possibly ride the brakes or hand brake to stop drive loss through an open centre much like people do on trails anyway.
the ATV video is pretty impressive, and demonstrates much better than the old guy stuck in a puddle video. the way thay are fixed to the wheel and retract is pretty sweet
i think the swivel pulley opposing the winching wheel is a must as well, works heaps better

on an atv it seems to work well....... on a 2.5 ton+ 4x4, no thanks.

ATV maybe, but even then an electric winch wins hands down.
But on a 4x4? If you ask me it's the stupidest idea ever!

thats bad karma, cause you know one day you will be stuck by yourself and you will be thinking should I get that 100meters of telstra rope out and wrap it around my wheels now......

in theroy, the winch works really well, we have done a lot of testing on it, and have found a few problems with it.
not really suited to the bush, more for the tourer who dosnt want the weight of a winchbar/winch
not recomended to use on front wheels
would hate to fit it in a boghole
time consuming to fit
we found that it works best in 2 wheel drive, this helps to prevent the winch overspooling. It may not be for everyone, but it does work.

Well I have also contemplated making one and seeing how it goes, but in saying that i wouldn't go anywhere with that as my only recovery equipment. It probably wouldn't be the best to use on muddy/rocky trails, but i don't think you could beat it out on sand dunes where you need to do long winches. An electric winch would overheat half way, and i couldn't be bothered using a hand winch. If i do make one, i will post pics and post a Video. I may even toy with the idea to get get airborne like the quad did on youtube.

looking at the website the price isn't that enticing either
"Kit prices range from $735 to $885 + GST"
that will get you a cheap electric winch.
there is an old us army recovery doco floating around the interweb showing two different ways of achieving this kind of winching. neither is applicable to most of todays 4wds though.
one is for dual wheeled trucks (ie 4 wheels on the rear axle or axles) and that is to wind the rope between the two wheels. cheap and effective.
The other mentions a hole or bracket of sorts in the end of the axle flange which you can place a bar through, then have the rope wind around that.
If you were setting up this kind of winch i'd say it might be easier to weld two brackets to the end of each axle flange, and just carry a bar and rope around. seems alot easier and quicker to setup.
edit found the doco

it's an interesting and worthwile, in my opinion, read

US Military Hummers used to have the lugs on the axle ends for wheel winching. These have been deleted now they run CTIS.

why do you need lockers , if you look into the product properly, it is 1 rope that runs between both wheels, negates the need for a locker.

The wheel winches are finished. Here's the pics. I haven't tried them out yet though.
i am also nearly ready to install the Runva NHW10000 Hydraulic PTO winch. The thread on the PTO winch is over in Toyota Tech.

But if you have to add on the price of a winch Bar to that price, it gets very expensive.
