I have been at sea since i was 14, and on many an ally boat, these are good for about 30 years before fatigue sets in.
i have also seen plate ally boats cracked to bits after being towed on corrugated dirt roads.
Should have used a boat trailer, much less damage.

What to use to get a good shine on my alloy bar? It was in real ordinary condition and I gave it the acid treatment which brought it up great - but dull.

Autosol (from any good auto shop) and lots of arm work.
Just bear in mind that the mirror finish you seek, will reflect sun light like the disco balls at Studio 54. This can be a PITA when driving on a bright sunny day and the glare from your bar will not only be a hazard to you but others as well.

it is very easy to bend an arb steel bar, i am lucky to get six months out of a numberplate
it would be interesting to see an alloy bar that has had the same hits as this one.

DavePatrol wrote:it all depends on the disigne of the bar, my mate hit a roo doing about 60ks and it snaped his alloy bar in 3 places, and still recked his grill ,the surounding metal, front gared and front flare all from the alloy bar pushing into it, where if he had a steal bar im sure he wouldent have done half the damage, personly if i was to put a bull bar on any car it would be a steal one, like my mate dident intend to use the bull bar for anything other than to hold driveing lights and erials but now he wished he got a steal one cos what he had to pay to get new panels and grill etc he could of spent on a decent steal bar instead, you never no when thay will come in handy.
cheers scott
dave thats not a bullbar if you had that same peice of puss made from steel it would look the same.thats a nudge bar "opps I tapped that"bar.
We use bars just like that one above but in steel on our work utes and we have to re weld them atleast every 12 months as they crack apart around all the hoop welds and mounts yep every one of our 6 cars has cracks in steel ,the diesel ones all at least twice.I belive its more in the DESIGN of the bar and qualiy of the ally used,If its too high a tensile it cant flex as much before it cracks.but having said all that id still use steel if i had the choice easier to modify,weld/repair add parts etc

Generally when travelling forwards things tend to come from in front, it pays to use the big wheel in front to avoid them

you can swerve for stuff if you want. plenty off city drivers make that mistake.
however most off the damage to my bar is from pushing through thick scrub.
