what kind of oil are people using which makes an oil change cost $100? If you buy oil by the 20L barrel I only pay $69.95 - $99.95 dependent on quality. Or is synthetic stuff hugely expensive? and is it worth going synthetic if your only lasting 5000k intervals. I buy my oil filters in 6 packs when on special, thick it works out at about $30 per oil change.

so for me 5000k services are cheap as chips not making kiwi bacons argument very relevent. thought on cars which csot more to service maybe it might be.

Obviously you're not counting your time. Whether you do it yourself or pay someone, that costs.
What does it come too factoring in your hourly charge out rate including time to dispose of the oil.

But regardless of how expensive or cheap it is. Unnecessary work is still unnecessary work.

I think the thread, as interesting as it is, has gone miles off the original topic...

However,

Regarding time, if you do it yourself, (oil changes that is), and you enjoy it, then the time has no cost value.

And another case.. My father-in-law's Hilux, LN167, 5L Diesel. 165,000kms. Previous owner neglected oil changes because he was either too pissed to do them, or had no money to buy oil or filters or whatever. This thing spun a main bearing. It caused extensive damage to the crankshaft, and metal particles were (apparently) found in the oil. End of the day, it cost $7000 to fix. Now I think he got ripped off on the rebuild, but none the less, the whole thing could have been prevented by regular servicing.

It's not that clear cut. Many well serviced vehicles have spun bearings.

Some people say frequent oil changes are cheap insurance. But they're not insurance at all.
See Insurance Companies give you a contract stating if certain events happen, that they'll pay some or all of your costs.

Oil changes are suck it and see. If any of your engine components (say an infamous toyota big end bearing) decides to crap itself and feed metal into your oil galleries, it doesn't care what your service schedule was.

Nah I dont charge time out to work on my hobbies, it takes fark all time and i enjoy working on cars, its half an hour every once in a while and at $30 it is a cheap reduction in risk of a large outlay.

I dont think its safe to say you dont need 5000k services, nor can you say a 5000k service will save your donk - as service intervals depend on the engine, differne t engines need different things. But it will reduce engine wear, no doubt, sure something else could cause failure but your giving the piece of metal the best chance.

ON origional topic - bad fuel ecconomy, lots of smoke and getting it tuned didnt help? then time to start looking into injectors. if you dont blow any smoke and you get 9L per 100k's then keep cruizing

Which is why I suggest oil analysis. Do it a couple of times and you can know for sure if your engine needs 5,000km or 15,000km oil changes. You can also get an early warning of what's going wrong (metals count, silica count, fuel in oil etc).

If it's about reduction of risk, then analysis is far more sensible than blindly going through the motions.

10L of oil = $70
1L of oil (cause it takes between 10-11L) = $13
2x oil filters = $12ea
TOTAL= $107

Because the oil thread's been done to death. And still people choose to agree to disagree. They can't help themselves.

But no need to get nasty about it and call everyone SPANKERS and tell us to "FARK OFF".

After all, looking at your sig, aren't you from a "VICTORIAN COCKATOO"??

Yeah, I agree.

But I think if he reads through all the crap, I think it's been covered. The rest of the rubbish is just that. We could go on for hours. Even more now that my fridge is full of rum....

Until the idiot light farks up, that is.

Did my injectors at 200K and did squat difference to anything.

My injectors seems fine, although one of my mates commented on the soot coming from it when i was giving it stick the other day. When i eventually get around to putting my turbo on, i'll take it to Dieseltec first and see what they recon. I'm not going to fork out if they dont need replacing, however 200,000km (same as mine) does seem like a long time.
