I would not bother with a 253, plenty of 5l injected v8s around and you will not meet ADR polution specs with a 253 unless you go straight LPG, also under any circumstances "DO NOT USE ANY CASTLEMAIN ROD SHOP KITS", any decent engineer will warn you off them straight away, just ask a couple, that is of course if you like to throw away big dollars on cr@p that does not fit and they pocket your money, then they dont want to know you as they have your cash, believe me and many others that is their buisiness ethics, I have been stung and feel that if I tell others that they they wil be wary of these scamers and not be drawn into their web of lies, it felt like burning $100 dollar notes, for months, be warned as i wish i was, they still have not or wont contact me with an explanation or my money back and i returned the "KIT THAT WONT FIT" last year and waited months for a reply/help, stiff sh@t was their reply. Should not be in business with principles like this, "DO NOT GIVE THEM MONEY" you have been warned.

Getting back to the thread, why go with a aftermarket engine? seriously, consider a 1HDT**. You will be able to use near on all your factory parts, incuiding accessories like aircon (I would suggest a new clutch) wont have any issues with registration, and will get good, reliable economical power.
I reckon if you pick up a good second hand engine (maybe a later model out of a 100 or 78 series) and fit it yourself you should be able to put it in with a new exhaust for around 10K
V8 conversions may sound great, but economy suffers and the little things all add up to an expensive process.

my vote it freshen up the 1hz and turbo it or run the 4.5

You could put the 253 in using a marks adaptor that are drilled for turbo & holden pattern. Then at a later date fit a commo 5lt. They are a very simalar block but have the turbo pattern. They only downside is the 253 will struggle to move the 80 series out of the shed & it will probably go faster down a hill with the engine turned off.
I'm thinking it willcost about 4k to fit a 253. If it was me I would keep it diesel, get a secondhand 1hz or bite the bullet & fit a 1hdt a straight bolt in job.
I think the 253 is a bad choice for an 80 series

I dont think anyone has asked yet, but what do you want to use the 80 series for? Really makes a big issue of what engine to run.....

That's a 1HD-FTE, and they start at around $9k PLUS FITTING and electrical, and adaption to suit plus plumbing, intakes, power steer, aircon, etc etc..

the wiring is the biggest headache (for most)
the Engine bolts into where a 1hz was (same block) using the mounts and sump from the 80s 1hz
powersteer bolts up
aircon needs 1 new hose made
intake plumbing lines up (79series)
radiator pipes line up i have std 1hz radiator in mine does not over heat EVA unlike the 1hz just shows how much more efficient the 1hdfte is
so really it is just exhaust , wiring and 1 air con hose
it could be done for 10k if you got one for 8.5-9k but you would need to do every thing your self and that would be with no intercooler(as 79s is any way)
once again the wiring if you are not up to it will bump you over the 10k
i used to charge 800 turn key or 600 for flying lead stand alone loom, but now i am OS

I don't thinnnnnk it is legal anyway can't put an old engine into newer car. When did they finish with the boat anchors 1984? into a 1990/1991 I don't think so

Incorrect, as long as it is straight LPG you can put an older model engine into a newer car.

i think you mean 470ft-Lbs which is about 630Nm. Gen 3's have about 470Nm.
253s are pox. I love V8 conversions but not coming from the 1HZ. too much effort changing stuff. im voting for get it rebuilt. turbo it later if funds are low. they love it.
