quick question.. shoudl i aviod cars that have been used in the mines?
its obvious to spot one cos its impossible to get rid of all the red dirt in it

Yes, and don't be so sure they are easy to spot.
I remember years ago when my dad was doing motor trimming.
A local Toyota Dealership was bringing in Ex Mine 80 Series Wagons.
Obviously base models. They would strip them and clean them right out. They would then fit a new bullbar, GXL Flares and other external parts to dress it up. Then slap on a nice new set of Alloy rims and tyres. Then would be sent to dads to completely retrim the interior, carpet fitted, velour seats and door trims, new roof lining.
Visually the things looked great.

soo if they have been used in the mines that means they have been thrashed?
im guessing that its pretty hard to come by a nice used hilux in wa haha

mmm yeah hiluxs hold their value mysteriously well haha
is it cos the are "indestructable" .. cos i saw the top gear episode where they tested that theory.
my list has been narrowed down to
Pajero
Hilux
Patrol
Grand Vitara (cos its the only car my dad well help me to look 4, i need to convince him otherwise haha)

didnt 80s come with 31s standard?
Well... technically 31.16" haha. (275/70R16). But what 80 still has original sized tyres?
supersean - I see you have patrol on your list... I still think the 80 is worth considering!!

Wouldn't the original owners manual, or log books show who it was first registered to?

ohh what.. i thought land cruisers were way out of my price range..
i might have to add the 80 to my list then.. is the landcruiser the best out of the patrol and the pajero.. i always assumed it was the best off road..

seen as this is my 1st car that i will actually car about.. a GV does seem a bit "g@y" haha.. my dad tried showing me one with frangipani stickers plastered all over it haha

Landcruisers and patrols are pretty comparable ability and mod wise. the lc looks more modern at the same age and tend to ask bigger dollars.
I personally would go a patrol for offroad work for the reason they are cheaper so less to lose.
beware that either petrol model will drink like a fish - like seriously. either get one on gas or forget them. the diesels are much better on fuel but ideally want to be turboed.
the paj and jackeroo are a smaller truck which can often get as many places by being able to use different lines and they are lighter. but you never really see either done up as comp rigs - they are not the same sort of vehicle- but that doesnt mean they are not great 4wds for what we mortals are looking at.
As for getting less in a lux? - luxury well yeah I guess so, they hold their price cause cars like grand vits will not be kept on the road much when the ks get up. the hilux is simple enough to keep going reliably.
with patrols and cruisers and luxs they tend to sag factory suspension pretty badly so if it has not beenlifted at some stage they tend to be pretty lowrider style.
If they made an 80 series ute i think i would be driving one now.

yeh the 80 does look more modern.
so pretty much every 4wd has its weaknesses n its strengths.
does the deisel lux have to be turbo for it to be a good 4wd?

not really, but it does need to be turboed to be nicer to drive on the road.
dont imagine the turbo making it a fast car, imagine the turbo making it a slow normal car. as in an improvment on stuupid slow car
The only issue I had was having to use low 1st which left me short of momentum on some steep hill climbs, but low 2nd didnt give me enought torque to reaccelerate again. now its not such an issue.
Im not sure how they go on the sand without the turbo, can any one shed some light?
you can buy a turbo kit off a surf for 500-700 and fit it pretty easy.

hahah eyh i wouldnt think that it could be a fast car. i have driven a mates without the turbo.. n there is no way that thing could ever be fast haha
i guess buying the turbo seperate could be an option, cos they seem to be pretty hard to find with the turbo in it already. would that bring extra problems tho? fitting a non standard turbo? gearbox..?

You should lower compression so new head gasket. but many dont bother.
braise a tube onto your sump for oil return. and get a dump pipe to your exhaust.
gearboxs are fine, ive been turboed for 50000k now and had no issues, many say dont turbo them when they have 300+ ks. you might belucky and hit 100hp so its not really stressing the drive train.
