I think the aim is usually to weld plates onto the chassis, that have threaded holes in them, and them bolt sliders to those plates. So it's still a bolt-on arrangement.

If there were no strength issues with welding on the chassis it would be a much neater option. But since it's regarded as compromising the chassis clamping is preferred.

mick, cheers thats great food for thought, and thank you for letting me know what the flanges were as i had no idea.

also i see your point in a body builder being a completely different trade, but if you know what your didnt it should be fine yeah( i have seen plenty of really good work done.

also i have seen spring hangers welded to the bottom of chassis, cause that is the flange how does that work(or illegal jobs)

stokedapollo - chimp boy has said what i was going to say, except what i had in mind would be on the same path but different, and most probably strengthen the chassis rails, except then as others had mentioned if i landed on it hard enough i would twist the entire arrangement instead of breaking a u clamp, so as this thread was designed to gather intonational, i have gathered what i want to know, and i will most likly not use my idea.

Welding to the flanges are illegal no matter what. Some engineers just turn a blind eye to it so they get there cash thats all. With the welding thats really up to you but i'd just drill holes and put a crush tube in and put a couple of tacks around the tube to hold it in place and bolt the slides to that.

BTW what type of chassis is it? Is it C channel like a 60 series or a fully enclosed chassis like a GQ/GU?

were talking a 60 series, however, and this may have applied only to the 61, it had fully enclosed box section(my old first one) was a 89 model 12ht, and i remember running the diff breathers to the front, it was an absolute struggle through the insides of the chassis rails...

maybe the older ones are c as ive never looked at them( and this thread is about a 60, as i will be getting another one in the next couple months)

My 60 series is made of C channel thats why I asked.
