Try the big balls offroad site, from memory 4" lift spring with rancho shoocks. I know oppisite lock fit them over here.

Also for pictures of the climax shackle's check out the big balls site under suzi suspension.

Mine do - series 3 whine...

I asked Liam about it - it's completely normal.

Also note that it's good practice to run the s3 hopper with 140weight gear oil for better gear protection etc...

Zack wrote:and what is the minimum suspension lift with 2' inch body lift that 31" inch tyres fit under??

0" spring lift...

31's (and even some 32's) will fit under a zook with 2" body lift and no spring lift.

However, since you have the springs - it would make sense to keep them / set them up to work nicely.

I guess they are whining all the time - but it's mainly noticeable in low range when in the higher gear (i.e. 4th or 5th)...

If you are concerned about it - talk to Liam (who runs Big Balls Offroad and Rockhopper) about it...

The other thing worth finding out from the person your got it from it whether or not the bearings in the case were changed when the gears were installed - these could be causing some / all of the noise.

Another alternative is to fit a bigger exhaust, or some swampers to your car - that will create more noises to be disctracted by and make your x-fer case sound quieter ;)

Or a girl friend, they tend to whine louder.....

I noticed bazooked's s3 was whining alot on sunday, but he didn't seem to think it was a problem.

Apparently, according to some tax invoices that the previous owner gave me the roackhopper was installed in 1/2002 and the bearings, input shaft and thrust washers were replaced.

Another question Greg who did your rockhopper gearing?

Was it GRP (who i believe don't make/install rockhoppers anymore) or Big Balls off-roading??

Do they use the same gears or totally different??

Also some pictures included below of the Zook and of the Climax shackles without pins.

I find the date of 1/2002 to be a bit unbelievable as I think they were only released in early 2003, myself Greg and droopypete got some of the first ones I believe

We bought our gearing from bigBallsOffroad and had Total 4WD install them. I believe the gears are from the same manufacturer now but initially were supplied from another one.

PM Liam here on the board as he is Mr BigBallsOffroad (that really doesn't sound right) and he can answer your questions with a bit more of a clue than I can

Ok...

Your pics show that your shackles are not pinable i believe - otherwise there would be a hole in the side of them through which you would put the pin.

All Rockhopper gears are made by a company called Rockhopper - which is a subcompany (i think) of bigballsoffroad.

If you mean who has installed my gears? it was Total 4wd down in melbourne.

If the bearings and everything else were replaced, then i reckon it should be all good in there... change the oil if you want to.

Either way - they are out of warranty (12 months) - but you could always call up Liam (BBO) for a little chat about the noise anyways.

Nice looking zook mate... very clean (not for long i hope) :D

Who makes rockhopper is it big balls offroading or another company and big balls offroading just sell them??

I am talking about a rockhopper from G.R.P auto not big balls offroading??

edit: well installed by G.R.P auto anyway
it cost $1600

Incorrect - they were around for a good period of time before we bought ours but were more expensive and (i think) were not built by the mob in japan that made our batch...

Cruise here for a pick of a climax shackle with locking pin...

http://bigballsoffroad.com/category98_1.htm

then click on the pic and you will be shown another climax shackle without a locking pin... interesting.

Gee they flex well I'm impressed :? That has been my experience of them too. When you think they will flex they don't and then suddenly they do and you fall over or bend a spring

that's exactly right.
I’ve got other photos where they flex seem to work really well. i will try and find.
they are unpredictable

my series 3 whines like a b1tch
comin home from a night drive last weekend i was talkin to yldo4b on the uhf an he could hear it quite easily then
mine done that from new ;)

also they are the old climax shackles new ones are pinable (but still Grimace)

get rid of the shackles put some standard ones back in or a bit longer

lose some leafs out of your spring packs (so it dont ride like the diffs are welded to the chassis)

and open up the spring clamps

then it should ride better and prolly even flex better as the springs will compress alot more ;)

What amount of springs people using in their packs. SPUA as well.
Also with the spring clamps, do you take them off or losen the them?? not sure on that one

cheers

From memory I have the main leaf and then the three smaller ones. no overloads. Makes for a soft spring but spring life is compromised. As to the clamps I have just bent them up into a u shape so they stop the leaves fanning out but still allows them to spread vertically

I'm running 3 leaves front and rear... spring clamps completely removed.

The car hits the bump stops front and rear when compressed (this means the car is as low as possible - hense - as stable as possible)

I must agree though - spring life will be shortened by doing this - but springs are cheap compared to a lot of other things.

upfront i run 4 leafs it made up of
main leaf: standard zuk rear
second leaf : standard zuk main leaf with the eyes cut off
third leaf: second leaf from standard zuk rear
fourth leaf: third is i think 3rd leaf from front spring pack

rear is a stock feroza spring pack 4leaves + overload leaf

dont cut your spring clamps off just open em up

I will be running RUF as well. With the feroza rears, are they longer than zooks?? how much stuffing around to fit them in.

With the "standard rear main leaf" Is this a lifted pack or using the std flat springs.

Has anybody got any pics of the what the spring clamps look like when "opened up". With the clamps taken off, doesn't that allow the springs to move sideways, stressing the springs?

Last one: If you take the overload spring out, does this lower the springs as in lower lift?

I am aiming to use 2.5" lift springs with 1" extended shackles, RUF for 31's.

Thanks
