Now I see your reasoning not wanting to have to cert it and all but at the end of the day how much would it cost you to have it inspected ? as the Nike Ad's says "just do it" and worry about it latter

In QLD I can't get 3" body lift certified no matter what 2" is maximum legal.

in NSW you can but Insurance companies get pretty nervous about big lifts too, and the 1" is so easy it's worth doing the 1" lift.

there's Vitaras overseas running on 44" boggers.... you'd be suprised.

really at that stage the engineering is more important than the donor car anyway.

I knew you'd have easy clearance for 30"s now.

My 31"s only fit due to much butchery (also healped by the 1" offset and 15x8s so 30"s will be it, or 31"s on small offset.

hmm, 29`s on 2inch lift - i would of thought 31`s would go on with 4inch

where abouts did yours rub?

Nope.... because height is not the problem, the top of the guard is fine for clearance, it's where the bigger tyre travels while steering.

Same as the usual sierra spot (roughly where the accelerator stop is mounted to floor) plus also outer lip of front guard at bottom.

You'll clear 30"s easy, but 31"s you need more lift or you're gonna probably have to take to the metal like I did.

Mine also has some big offset rims so the clearance issue is at least partly due to them.

You may just clear 31"s on Sierra rims now, depending on how big your 31"s really are. Most people seem to need 2" suspension and 2" body + a little massaging - but it varies from model to model. For instance antt rubbed using my old 30"s and 1" bodylift but I didnt.

I'd recommend stick with sierra offset rims in a 15x7 since the Vitara already has much wider wheelbase than a sierra anyway and it should prevent wear and tear on wheelbearings, brake loadings etc.

the aim was for 32x9.5 pedes but a mate of mine has these on his disco and the measure up over 33

i`ve been rethinking bigger tyres, might aim for 31inch pedes i think - cutting doesnt fase me... Aesthetics are for road cars

but next i want to sort out my bar situation, gearing and a rear traction aid

oh, and going to egypt next year hasnt helpped the budget

Vitara lift

Post by Impulsive »

In my old one, all I had to do is hammer flat the seam just inside the inner guard (where the accelerator stop is), and just bend the outer guard inwards ever so slightly at the rear of the front wheel arch to clear my 31's on F100 offset rims.

It never touched after that... and looked sweet too!!

That was on a 2-3in spring lift...

good to see ya got in in gonzo :)

mine has a 50mm bodylift, 50mm suspension lift, and 10mm spacers in the front. doesn't rub the 30's at all, but i've had to hack the sh*t outta the front and back to get the mongrels on it. it still rubs bad in the back, so i've gotta extend my bumpstops more :x

No movement on the Dual transfers - been thinking more that I'll just save up money for other projects for now

In the end the cost of doing dual transfer cases and SAS on the Vitara greatly outweighs the cost of buying a sierra and rockhopper. Jeez... i've seen a few recently cheap as well.

With the legal status of such a vehicle here in QLD (ie can be put off the road permanently on any time at a whim and there's nothing I can do about it) I'm not prepared to spend the money on those kinds of mods until something changes.

So I guess I'll just make it a bit nicer with stuff like P/S and sidesteps for now and wait to see what happens.

yep, i've got infinitly adjustable gearing, i like to call it the clutch :D

atm i'm looking at doing lux axles under it with hiace centres (5.29). just working out the legalities of it. then i'll try to work out what size tyre i'd eventually like to run (cough36cough ;) ) and figure gearing out from there

Here's an SAS

http://www.outerlimits4x4.com/PHP_Modul ... hp?t=17393

http://www.outerlimits4x4.com/PHP_Modul ... hp?t=13907

just search the thread or look at some of the US or euro sites...they stopped gettign samurai/sieera when vitara came in so people have gone much further with the development.

Vitara lift...

Post by Impulsive »

Sorry if I'm being dumb guys, but I just wanna get this right before I order my blocks.

The chassis support on the Vitara has a dished section in it. I'll be using 60mm diameter blocks, so they'll sit inside this dished section (unlike the much larger diameter standard rubbers that seem to sit over the top of the whole thing).

Effectively then, I need the blocks I use to not only take up the room that is comprised by the dished section, but also the thickness of where the existing standard rubber is, before I can consider that I've gotten any lift out of it.

So, given that the combined thickness of the depth of the dished section the blocks will sit in and the existing standard body rubber is about 30mm, I reckon at least for the 4 main body supports, I'm gonna need 65mm tall blocks (to get a 35mm lift).

Whatta you guys think so far?

In addition to that, with the front & rear lift points, all I have to do is take up the room previously occupied by the standard (15mm thick) rubber, and then add 35mm. This means I'm gonna be using 50mm blocks at the front & rear (behind the bumpers).

Opinions?

Again, sorry to be painful, but I don't wanna be left with gaps all over the joint...

i placed the block between the body and the 1st rubber mount, the rubber mount fits into the indent on the chassis mount.

on the underside of the chassis mount i removed the rubber bit and flipped the tapered washer so that i would have enough thread to fit the nut on

Vitara lift

Post by Impulsive »

Ahhhh, thanks Gonzo. Excellent pic mate.

That explains how all your body blocks can be the same height (because u left the existing rubbers in).

It also shows how the factory rubber fills in the dished section I was referring to.

Thanks for your help...

Vitara lift

Post by Impulsive »

Pffft... I haven't even driven it yet!! Bought it with a rooted engine.

Gotta flog the Sierra before I start driving it seriously anyway (due to transferring the insurance over).

I'll do before & after shots too...

I know that's how I did both my sets... Why would you want to make it shorter so you need a bigger block?

I remember a little while back I had a set of 1" poly blocks that were white poly with black paint.....
