Power steering conversion q for 45 series

Where is the extra degree of movement it shouldn't have? You would have the same points of movement with any 60 series power steer conversion. A uni at the firewall end and a uni at the steering box end.pcman wrote:it gives the lower shaft a extra degree of movement that it shouldnt have
while yes it would be minimal i wouldnt drive it there are much neater ways to go about it
i really cant see a engineer aproving that
Have a look at the factory setup on an 80 series steering column. You have the main column shaft down from the steering wheel which joins the rag joint with uni used in this conversion. Then a colapsable intermediate shaft from there down to a uni on the steering box. I have used a 75 series colapsable intermediate and uni instead. It has the same type and number of joints as a factory 80 series so I can't see your concern for extra movement nor engineering aproval.
Here's a shematic of the 80 series column if you haven't got an 80 handy to look at:
Also to my knowledge, there is no approval code for a power steering conversion from manual steer. There is a code for LHD to RHD but thats it. Happy to be corrected here.
So all of that aside, how would you do it "neater" while retaining the 40 series column?
wow never knew the 80's had a rag joint aswell as the uni that just seems dodgy to me
and when i did my conversion i ditched the 40 colum and went 75 tilt colum and 75 intermediate shaft no ragjoint in that setup
and ive never seen anyone incorporate the ragjoint into a 40 series power steer setup when using a 60 series box

Yeah I went with the 60 column in mine but only because it was there to use and I liked the idea of having all the switching on the column instead of the dash. The owner of this 40 wanted to retain the 40 column.pcman wrote:wow never knew the 80's had a rag joint aswell as the uni that just seems dodgy to me

Perhaps the only reason you have never seen a rag joint used in a 60 power steer conversion on a 40 is because no one has come up with a way to do it while retaining the 40 column before. The only way I can see it being done is to cut the end off the 40 column and spline the end to accept a 75 uni.

When I do it, I ditch the rag and keep the 40 column. Bolt on, engineer approvable.RAY185 wrote:Yeah I went with the 60 column in mine but only because it was there to use and I liked the idea of having all the switching on the column instead of the dash. I just bolted the feroza non-power steer box to firewall section onto the 40 column and it has the same splines as a 60 series box.
I also use a landcruiser suspension bush in the column for support, you need to grind down the later model leaf spring bush, or drill the early ones out. Or run a bearing over the shaft.
Have done more then 5 different 40s with 60 PS

As in a Feroza intermediate shaft that has an end that mates to the end of the 40 column without mods? Cool. Does it have a uni there too? Tell me you got pics knee grow.bj on roids wrote: I just bolted the feroza non-power steer box to firewall section onto the 40 column and it has the same splines as a 60 series box.
I got pics of my setup and Im actually driving my brothers car that is another one we setup..RAY185 wrote:As in a Feroza intermediate shaft that has an end that mates to the end of the 40 column without mods? yep its got a uni top and a uni at the box end.
I also have a spare one in a box downstairs. LOL
Except the photos are on my other hard drive.. Come over and I'll show you Ray its All bolt on...

Last time I came over you got me drunk and fed me sausage. Was a good arvo.
I'll try and drop around for a look sometime but it probably won't be for a while. Try and post up some pics anyway man (even if they are your patent dodgy phone pics). I'm sure others will be interested.
Personally, I don't have a problem with the rag but definately interested in other ways to do it.

Ray, the intermittent setting on your wipers probably doesnt work as there is a wiper relay/box/jobby thing that controls the delay which is else where in the wiring. (on 60 series they are underneath to the left of the column and grey in colour) dunno how you would wire it in though.....
My 60 series rebuild....

How'd you join the top feroza uni to the 40 column?bj on roids wrote:I got pics of my setup and Im actually driving my brothers car that is another one we setup..RAY185 wrote:As in a Feroza intermediate shaft that has an end that mates to the end of the 40 column without mods? I had a splined male adapter and that went into another part which I then bolted to a bit of 10mm plate cut into a circle with holes drilled in for the feroza? or something shaft piece and bolted to the 40 series.hj 45 wrote:How'd you join the top feroza uni to the 40 column?bj on roids wrote:I got pics of my setup and Im actually driving my brothers car that is another one we setup..RAY185 wrote:As in a Feroza intermediate shaft that has an end that mates to the end of the 40 column without mods? ahh, I thought it a little wierd that the feroza had a flanged end on the intermediate shaft that would "bolt on" to the 40 column end. Feroza intermediate shafts I've seen are just a straight slip shaft with female unis each end. So you actually have to fab up a flanged male spline adapter to make it work? Pull yer finger out and get us a pic hómó. Otherwise I might be in your neck of the woods on sat night and will come scope it out.bj on roids wrote:I had a splined male adapter and that went into another part which I then bolted to a bit of 10mm plate cut into a circle with holes drilled in for the feroza? or something shaft piece and bolted to the 40 series.hj 45 wrote:How'd you join the top feroza uni to the 40 column?bj on roids wrote:I got pics of my setup and Im actually driving my brothers car that is another one we setup..RAY185 wrote:As in a Feroza intermediate shaft that has an end that mates to the end of the 40 column without mods? Yep thanks mate. My sparky said something along these lines and I just told him not to worry about it. Might do it sometime later down the track if I feel the need.flyology wrote:Ray, the intermittent setting on your wipers probably doesnt work as there is a wiper relay/box/jobby thing that controls the delay which is else where in the wiring. I had 75 on my last 40, but I did use a bronco box on my first 45 series, mated it with range rover steering shaft parts as the splines worked, with donut, and I used the whole part back to the collapsable column, and we surface ground the flats on the toyota shaft to fit into the rangie bottom section. I used the rangie mount through the firewall mated to the toyota floor section also.
We also made the pitman arm for it to suit, so we had variable ratio 2.2 turns lock to lock, used a rangie pump and oil can, as they were easy to mount in the small 45 engine bay, and I made a brace for the top of the bronco box, and used a falcon top plate with bush instead of bearing, to ensure the box was strong enough. It mounted where the relay box normally goes with a custom mount set up.
It lasted with 35" tyres and 350 hp Chev for many years, and made it nicer to drive than the factory set up, by far.

Supercharged 80 SOLD - "OPERATION SANDY" now in effect.
btw, late model 40 series trucks have intermittant wipers as standardRAY185 wrote:Yeah wipers work, just not on the intermittent setting. Don't ask me how though.
I got my sparky mate to wire it up. I know he had to setup relays to change the switching for most things like headlights/highbeam, etc, probably the same for the wipers.

pretty sure the timing box is behind the switch too, so you can just use the entire switch on an earlier model.jessie928 wrote:btw, late model 40 series trucks have intermittant wipers as standardRAY185 wrote:Yeah wipers work, just not on the intermittent setting. Don't ask me how though.
