I have 3 4wd's

04 L/R xtreme 110
96 d/c hilux diesel
86 350 swb patrol

My 2 bobs
L/R takes a bitta gettin used to its a bit idiosyntric but good platform I reckon for a weapon off road.
hilux tried and true cops a beatin gets me there and back time and time again cheap spares (although nothing gone wrong that I haven't had direct input on damaging)
MQ my toy awesome to fang around in but unreliable mostly attributed to being 410hp and my negligence in driveline uprades to compensate for increased hp.

All three ARE reliable if driven within reason (even in extreme terrain)
My modded hilux is best offroad
My xtreme is fuel eff (with plenty torque), nice road manners, nice offroad manners
My niss is just great fun full stop.

If all were STOCK I would say that the extreme would win hands down esp offroad without doubt.

Not that I care, but I find it really odd how people are saying hiluxes are good off-road.

The reason I find it odd is that even though their owners say "HILUX" and do the arms-up symbol over and over in every thread they're in, if you scroll down and look at all the trip reports you'll see that the guys actually out there and driving the rough stuff every weekend are hardly ever in hiluxes.

Nor does this surprise me, since all you have to do is look at a hilux and you can see that it is too narrow and too tall to be any good off-road unless it's modified to the hilt, and that's before you get into the fact that they're gutless.

Don't get me wrong, I actually think they are pretty good work vehicles and if I needed a tradey's ute then a hilux would be on my list, but off-road? No way, not without a shitload of work done on them.

Anyway, I voted Nissan, but only because the question is hard to answer. If I had $1000 - $3000 to spend, I'd say Suzuki Sierra; $3000 - $6000 Nissan MQ; $6000 - $15000 GQ; $15000 plus and I'd start looking at something else maybe a disco or defender... but I can't really see any sense in spending any more than $15000 anyway.

Landcruiser is good too, but since it's basically just comparable to a patrol of the same age in every way, it's hard to justify the fact that they cost a lot more.

But hiluxes. Man, I never actually see these things out there on the tracks without an engine swap and a heap of other fairly serious mods to make them work okay.

Just my thoughts.

Are you for real? How can a Patrol with 7" of lift which 99% of them have be any more stable than a Hilux.

Stock for Stock a Hilux has better ground clearance better Break over angle better aparture/departure angle better low range gearing and a lot less weight.

All the Patrol has over it is i little more width and more power and a hell of a lot more weight to pull along.

can only comment on the ones I've owned brand new:-
80 Series GLX Cruiser - very good build quality - way too slow, too big.
GU Patrol - good build quality - way too thirsty, too big.
2.6 Jackaroo circa 1988 - most underated 4by in the whole wide world.
WG CRD Jeep - matches the other full size 4bys for towing, incredibly more economical to run than Cruiser and GU for fuel and services (too date @20k anyway), quick as anything, has taken me offroad everywhere the others did (and I'm not into hard core - just mainly trail exploration).
The best 4by I've owned so far, by a long way.

This is in relation to MY personal uses and needs only....and will not necessarily match other ppl's .

Meh, I didn't get out my protractor and check all the angles, all I can say is that on any given weekend off-road I'd see about six sierras, four patrols, two cruisers, a rodeo, and an old landrover for every hilux.

On the other hand driving home through the burbs afterwards I see plenty of hiluxes teetering on the brink of falling sideways thanks to the narrow track, 6" lift and 35s, just to transport a slab of XXXX home from the drive-through bottle-o.

:)

Dunno, do the rest of you see hiluxes out there in the dirt a lot? Maybe it's my imagination.

Didn't they? Took Nissan & Toyota till the mid eighties to get some of those features, such as 4 wheel discs & AWD, and Toyota still can't make a decent AWD system.

I say Landrover to 85,my S1 still starts first go and I`ll love a 85 County.
And for 85 onwards i say Hilux/Landcruisers utes for sure you can`t beat a better ute.

99% may have 7" lift in QLD but it isn't common down here. My first 4wd was a hilux (LN106) and i was on the verge of spending a pile of cash on it to get it to a good all round capable truck but after doing the sums i traded it on a GQ and have spent the cash on it. While i never seem to have finished the bloody thing (they should have a funnel on the roof for all the cash that goes into them) i'm damn sure if i'd spent it on the hilux i would have a far less capable and reliable truck than i do now. And i don't just mean off-road. :armsup: Each to their own! ;)

for offroad abbillity you just have to look at the top ten cars in comps need I say any more.7 inchs but they still articulate and go faster than a hilux even if they are heavier.GQ all the way.

My first hilux was a 1980 RN46 and that was replaced with a 1982 RN36
I bought them both brand new, and kept them almost stock (there wasn't much in the way of aftermarket back then) my next 4x4 was a 1976 FJ40
that started out stock and I proceded to spend over $50,000 on (ahh remember the eighties) that was followed by a couple of zooks, and of those vehicles when they where standard (I can not coment on Nissans or Jeeps or R/Rovers as I have never owned one) the hilux was the best of the lot, but I voted Suzuki :lol:
