Cheap entry to 4x4
Moderators: toaddog, TWISTY, V8Patrol, Moderators
my choice would be mq/k patrol
i paid 3k for my mq sd33 n/a wagon,1 owner other than clear lifting on bonnet absolutely immaculate
reliable as , cheap on fuel, and will pull a house
drove 1800ks in 3 days never put a drop of oil or water in it
steer clear of buying cheap POS and think youll fix it up cheap doesnt happen
maybe stretch the budget a little and buy something a bit better
people think i paid tooo much for my wagon, but other than oil changes i havent had a spanner on it
look around do your HOMEWORK the market is flooded at moment with cheap cars
good luck wat ever u do

I've been starting it every few days for 5mins or so (starts easy)
It runs quite roughly (3Y Engine) In terms of idling, with more revs its OK.
Should I pull the choke out when it hasnt been started for a few days for the first 5mins or so? I'm not sure about these older cars as it starts fine but idle is quite rough and smells like unburnt fuel a bit.
I am about to leave the car for a few weeks but when I come back I think i'll change the spark plugs and the oil and give it a good clean and respray and everything.
I might try and start it with the choke to see if it idles any better
I'm quite new at cars so I just go by what I read, although i can change oil and everything / spark plugs etc / leads.
The reason I got this is to learn a bit ... so yeah.

My old 4y used to run rough when cold started until it warmed up then ran fine.
Check your plugs rather than just replacing them, they will proibably be fine.
Check you points, they will be the most likely cause of rough idle or rough running in general. learn about points for old cars, they can be a pain.

Cause it starts -instantly- it just its like put put putputput put put put putput put put put put putputputput put put put putput put put put put putput.
Does that mean it needs choke or is choke only to start it?
Anyway I'll get my dad to help me with it.
Probably timing etc.
I think we've got a timing light somewhere.......

carbies arent perfect so it wont run on start up perfectly all the time, but they can be done well.
could be any number of things from mixture to timing to gunk... well any number of things.
as to needing the choke or not, unlikely to need it in qld in summer i would think, especially if it starts first kick. but it can depend on your current mixture.
does it run better at idle once its warm? if so try using the choke, if not dont worry about it. just play with the choke etc and you will eventually learn your trucks individual querks

Stale fuel can also cause some weird symptoms. How long has the current fuel been in the car for dopefish?thehanko wrote:carbies arent perfect so it wont run on start up perfectly all the time, but they can be done well.
