Locking the auto in gear will help to keep ATF temps down, but i agree 100% that spending a little bit of coin setting one up as a tow vehicle would be much more effective than some other cars. You can get airbag kits easily for the wagons too (leaf sprung), as well as off the shelf HD spring packs.

At the end of the day, the Falcons are a cheap (thats the best part), reliable, easy to get parts for, and fairly easy to fix. Spares are plentiful too - plus if you opt for an up-specced wagon, you car tow in comfort too.

In addition to a nice big tranny cooler on the falcon, its worth putting synthetic fluid in, or at least changing it a lot more often than than the service schedule specifies.

I'd say get rid of the ford you've got and get a solid axle rear fairmont wagon (or fairlane if you can find one).
Will do the job perfectly and you'll be in comfort.
The leafs in the rear will make all the difference to the independant he has currently.

All Ford (Falcon based) station wagons were/are solid rear axle with leaf springs, and not all AU's were IRS either (only available in sedans). IIRC it was factory fitted to XR6/XR8/Ghia, and an option on other sedans, and possibly also fitted to the AU Tickford Pursuit ute.
