I did think of colour sanding it and giving it a buff , but off the roller was good enough .

There are some water stains on the last two shots left over from the last time I made a mess of car lovers.

A raelly good spray gun and when sanding use a fine mist of black over the panel, it will show up the dents and scratches. If you can do the prep and then pay a mate to bring over his top dollar spray gun and lay the paint on for you. It might be a 4x4 but the better you get it the longer it will last. If you use acrylic keep the polish up to date.

Just getting my escort p/van ready for paint,the main thing is preparation and more preparation,If you are going bare metal go and get some flapper disc for your grinder,carefully remove the paint. Any score marks in the tin will stay there,but you can bog them up, then buy a good brand etch primer/undercoat Using a gravity feed spray gun, give it a good coat the paint will tell you how long to wait, before you give it a light rub and then clean it with prepsol .You can do this in the back yard.Them you are ready to paint,if you have a spray shop near you ask them how much they charge for the use of their spray booth.I'm hireing one foe 200 a day.But i'm fussy with my esky

I am telling you once you've used the plastic graffiti discs you will never go back to those flapper discs again, not for paint removal anyway.

they are a great thing
never seen anything strip body deadener(black jack)of a car floor quicker than them
the will clog up fast(anything will trying to removed tar like stuff)
i was impressed with them
BUT be careful with harsh abrasive stuff , as said, it can damage the metal work
you can fill in with bog or high fill primer
the whole job for yourself really depends on how much u want to spend

Those are the ones I was trying to describe! They are awesome, you should at least try one along with the flapper discs. I bet anything you will go back to the shop for more of the 3M ones, not for the sandpaper ones.

i think you would be best to post up a pic so people can see what you are painting and give a better description of what you need to do.
i am in the middle of painting my little project (its in primer as im typing) is the paint thats on there cracked and chipped if not then just give it a good hand sand (i say hand sand as you will feel every imperfection in the panel this way and you will be able to fix all the little problems you would not normally find till its finished) then wipe it over with wax and grease remover (or thinners) and give it a few light coats of primer (sanding it lightly between each coat) then spray your color on with a few light coats till you get a good solid color then when you feel you have the color right you can give it a few coats of clear to seal it and keep it shiny (if you want to put the clear on that is)

Have a look at old Bentleys and Rolls Royces they where painted with brushes up until the 1970s may have been even early 80s. Most common colour was black too You wont tell the difference.
