your defintely right there guts. there is nothing worse then going half the hog when at the bottom of your gut you want the whole hog. cause in the long run it cost you money and time. time and money you could be spending doing other mods

Just to throw in something left field, I started to build a comp truck but ran out of steam, not sure if regs would allow this but for something cheap and strong and not too heavy, get a gq shorty rolling chassis, stick a single cab hilux body on it to keep the weight and centre of gravity down and cost down, then you have reasonable suspension, strong diffs and gearbox if you you use the patrol one, then run the v8 of your choice, number 1 being and LS if the budget wont stretch that far then a 304 and if you want somehting different go a 351 clevo or chev for a bit more oomph an the cheaper side of things. If you want to stick with toyota driveline and chassis then either use an 80 series roller or 60 series diffs onto the hilux chassis with some mods

Yeah 60 series and 5.0 liter. Have to sort out a few things and then its full steam ahead.

60 series have basicly bigger lux diffs with poo design swivel hubs i'd consider 4 lt 1uzfe man light small can rev the tits off them all day plenty of grunt for the luxy got as much torque as a smackie

We have three 4 Runners in our club, 308 with aftermarket injection, 5.0 Injected, and 355 Turbo. All have 60 series rear diffs and none of the diffs suffer from the V8s, the 355 does tend to break rear axle studs but you get that with 350 plus Kw, the done thing is to drill the hubs out to 3/8" and fit unbrakos in place of the studs.
Busting front swivel hubs seems real strange to me but strange things do happen.
Stick with the 5.0 injected, they are designed and built to be torquey down low, perfect for 4 wheel driving. Unless you want to post vids of a 1UZFE doing 7000rpm, then go the 1UZFE for some bling factor.

That's my surf that kept breaking axle studs.
I now run 10mm unbreako hex bolts, 4x8mm chromo studs per side & a full ring (3mm thick), hex bolts torqued to 50lbs and for the last 5 months no breakages

I've heard of people breaking the steering arm studs. Most commonly because they come loose and the slop in it makes them sheer off. I put magnum studs in mine, kept them tight and haven't had a problem yet.

magnums on mine sheered off asap way quicker than the stockies i would of thought because they were to hard mackin them brittle dunno.... i now wanna put 9/16's through em

I've got a 1uzfe in a single cab 65 series Lux and for a engine that people always comment on having no torque etc i think its a great offroad engine. My truck is wired with a factory lexus auto behind the 1uz and also runs in manual mode only and theres times when i forget to change down and I've left it in 3rd and it just idles up tricky steep bits and also has power in reserve if needed.
But i must admit theres nothing like the deep sound of a oldschool v8

It really boils down to a personal choice of what you'd be HAPPY with
I've had a few hiluxs powered by v6's a v8 & a twin turbo 1ggte toyota 6 plus a 1jz version as well. Of them all I'd say the VNv6 was the best actual performer of them in the rough stuff, the 5ltr sounded the best but upset the handling a little weight wise when doing steep stuff & made the front more prone to getting caught up in ruts
.
The 6 cyl twin turbos always got more wow factor and were very good in mud or fast trails but needed a fraction too many revs when getting into the steep technical tracks.
My advice would be for a well set up early vn v6, but if deep down you want an eight go for it as you will regret anything else if that rumble is what you want..........
