thats cool...most my books are old dealer manuals and parts books. Most the pre-1980 ones don't list any models for diffs, tranny and such. I also was thinking you ment you could identify a serial number by using the book. For example breakdown a vin numer or something similar. When in fact I now understand you mean you can identify models of tranny, diff, transfer because they are listed in the books. As I am sure you know some car manufactures put things in the vin number to identify how a car is equipted. Such as motor type, engine, color and so forth being in the vin number. heard rumors that maybe Nissan did this with Patrols but it never been anything other than a rumor.
The old books are not worth much to people, hence me getting them for cheap or free. But they worth something to me!
None the less I meant no disrespect, and was mostly fishing for info....

V8Patrol wrote:There should be a set of numbers on the top of the box,... not on the top cover but on the top edge of the actual cast housing.
They should be on that top edge , at the front , on the passengers side.....
Should be a 5+ didgit number ....... its the "serial number",....
get me that number and Ill check it against my book if its listed.
The book is a bit tattered n worn and quite a few pages are missing unfortunately, so it luck of the draw really.
The book was like it when I got it and I cant get hold of another one..... and b4 you ask yes I have tried and bribed and even offered sex for another one !!

I had different ratios for the diesel cabstar box with 5th 1:1.
I'll have to llok at what those figures were and post them to this thread.

Really looks like 5 speed is more of a "must" than A/C or P/S, based on the fact I have neither of these now and they're both easier to fit at a later stage.
Not so much difference in price between an MK with the LSD, P/S, A/C and 5 speed to a GQ SWB (at least if you buy in NSW).
Hmmmm..... still prefer the MQ/MK looks and a better than 4000 rpm redline though.

this is some really good info on here but when all said and done what do you guys think would be the best swap either centre or whole diff to put behind my sd33 4spd cab chassis so i get lsd i imagine i only have a c200 oh its 80 MQ thanx

centre or whole diff makes no difference mate, as long as there is an LSD in both. Doing the whole diff is quicker and easier but also more costly...
