Great work guys, thanks alot... i'll start comparing prices of the commo, paj and frontera...

For the curious, this is what i'm thinking about copying. Not exactly but the same concept. Yes i know it won't be anywhere near as strong as a conventional SA setup, and after all is said and done i could just buy another set of GQ diffs for similar money as what could go into these.
I'm just sick of monotony, wanna do something different and fun at the same time. Whether i chuck a nam halfway through though is yet to be known!

fightara, yes they would have to be locked but the welder will solve that problem !! ;)

But Surfection, you never see a project through  As fun as the build up is, what use is it if it gets put in the "too hard basket"? I know we all do this to some extent, but you have said in the past that you sent good money after bad... your money is your own but, i'm hoping it's 3rd time lucky :D

same as 4J's, it seems to be only the smaller puss bucket MU that has the smaller ctr.

Shannon who are you to say i don't see a project through !! I'm just trying to think of ways to keep myself busy on weekends, the last buggy project was gonna be minimum $10,000. It's been revised and if i go ahead with this it'll be alot cheaper.
I hate the fact that i've lost big $$$ on this hobby / love, but it's the way it is... and if i have to lose some more to continue doing what i enjoy, so be it !!

thats what the sub frame is worth from mitsubishi so look at like he got the CTR, AXLES, A-ARMS, DISCS etc for free.

What about forgetting 4x4's and looking at some of the import cars, i reckon some of them must be cheap for rear setups and now is the time to buy as it is almost the end of the financial year.

Farrrrrrk I could get them much cheaper than that......................
Hmmmm maybe a marketing opportunity here going around in the middle of the night knocking off NM Paj rear ends from all the soccer mums
Won't they get a shock when they load up the Paj with super suckhole spoilt brat Junior and all his posh crap to be ferried to an outrageously priced private school in the morning :D
I'd only have to poach 2 or 3 a week and make a nice little income to build up my ultimate galgameth Poojabber

I'm not being negative, more power to ya, but I believe that a number of people have tried this in the US and the cost, high sprung weight, complexity and strength issues ( not to mention a "limited" gain in ground clearance) meant that many of them have gone back to a shaved solid axle. with a bigger tyre. There might be angle related issues with the CV's too ( reduced strength on high angles) Nissan in the US used 3 CV's per wheel on the front af a race car about 10 years ago to get around this problem. What was the plan for knuckles?

PS "only" 500 real HP for a Jag rear end.... seems ok for a 4WD to me...Then again, I reckon 660cc is plenty for a 4wd so i'll just shut up :D

Thanks for the comments steve... knuckles will probably be stock toy ifs setup, but not with toy control arms obviously. Not really sure at this stage, as i said, just wanna try something different. Tyres would be limited to 35/36 with an auto box to minimise stress and shock loading.
Just looked in the tradingpost, seems VR/VS IRS diffs can be had for under a hundred bucks, might go down that route on the weekend and see what turns up.

I believe it read/heard somehwere they werer making air lockers for commos, as they would help boat owners on slippery boat ramps,

if not, you still have Detroits, and spools and the likes.........there are alot of options out there,

I guess now you bring that up, its also important that you can get matching CW/P ratios if you mix up the diff sources.

Duuuude, remember the young bloke that argued with me that coils flexed better than leaves  And I said, but leaves are cheaper, easier, quicker, and simpler!!

You wanted something different.

FAWK something different, put a different dash in it, or different wheels on it, make it with solid axle diffs, easier, cheaper and quicker and simpler. A buggy could keep you going for a year if your only going steady and doing it on weekends, and not putting heaps of effort in and keeping it bling all the way!!

You will look back in two years and agree with me!

Some of the Jap-crap Blingmasters would be able to help. A lot of the latest RWD offerings from Toyota and Nissan run IRS with some serious HP behind them (300ZX, any of the Lexus's, etc.)

May well be a cheaper option.

Should be plenty of options with R/P's.

The Rodeo (Frontera) and similar Isuzu/Holden vehicles have D44 solid rears, at least in the USA.

The TT 300ZX rear is the R230, 230mm crown wheel. Not sure about the stub axle shaft diameter, but the R200 uses 29 and 30-spline, so figure the R230 is that or larger. The full-size US Pathfinder Armada with the 305 hp (227 kW) 385 lb-ft (522 n-m) V8 uses the R230 as well, with 14 and 16-tooth pinion gears no less!

The venerable R200 has served the Skyline for years now, and still serves the 350Z.

The Ford Mustang Cobra uses an 8.8 IRS rear to put down 390 hp and 390 lb-ft (290 kW, 529 n-m).

The Viper uses a measly Dana44-4 rear to put down 500 hp and 525 lb-ft (373 kW, 712 n-m) if you can believe it...

And of course there are plenty of other supercar-class examples...

Im Chewing like crazy but havn't enough teeth

But on your Diff thoughts ,,

Have no idea if this would go together BUT - Series 111 rover butts
are cheep as , dana 60 derivative - with a smaller input spline on the pinion i think Going by seal sizes , No doubt bill on the board would know ,
Cut the centre out ,use a D60 35 spline spool , and grab some 35 spline outer stubs from a front dana , cut the housing to siut bingo probly 20"
wide, run 2 1/2 inch steam pipe for axles ---- out to an other set of 35 spline stubs . :?:
