After much thought, i decided to try and do the bearings myself. I was able to source both front bearings plus a swivel hub seal rebuild kit for $300 in total.
Started to strip the wheel, bearings hub etc.. and found out it had completely disintergrated....
Signs of collasped bearings..

Completely trashed....bits of metal everywhere..

clean the spindle and make sure there is no damage.

make sure the actual hub itself isnt damaged either.

Dust seals tend to let go, getting crap in the bearings, and this happens !!

Oh, and make sure you put the spacer rings back in !!!

Pulling the tyre off revealed that rim had damaged the brake caliper.....

Also the hub and disc would need to be replaced as they were damaged as well....

Trying to take lock nut off with 54mm socket........ ended up damaging nut and will now need to replace them. Might look at converting to GU as suggested before........will have to see what happens and for how much.
happy with progress.....

Holy shiat! :shock:

As said - make sure every single part you're putting back in is CLEAN! Thats some pretty serious neglect going on there - i can't beleive you didn't feel or hear anything before it completely let go!

Maybe whip over the thread on the stub axle with a wire brush too.

Just pushing the stub axle back in won't have damaged anything, good to see you having a crack :armsup:

bit off topic...

im going to nissan tomorrow to get the bits needed for the GU lock but upgrade. Just want to know if they are the same across all the GU's? as the parts people at nissan are anal about what year and what body your patrol is when u want to order parts.

so all i need to get is:

2 lock rings
2 lock plates
4 screws

???

im assuming the lock rings and lock plates have a series of holes around them? and the screws hold them together?

peace

matty

good pic of the parts here http://www.patrol4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=46832" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
im also re-doing the preload of my front bearings and bought this tool http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Nissan-GU-Hub-So ... 45f3de78d0" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

anyway should there be a thrust washer between the outer bearing and the lock nut?
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Nissan-Patrol-Y6 ... 1e5d22f8fb" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
this photo shows the thrust washer i haven't found on and was wondering where it should go? ive checked the workshop manual and it shows a thrust washer when using the old 54mm lock nut and tab washer but it doesn't show a thrust washer with the new type of lock nut.

still going on mine, had the inner bearing inner race sieze on the spindle/stub axle and had to use a bearing remover to prize it off. it shouldn't be an interferance fit but i can't get the new bearing to slide on and off the stub axle. im going to give it a brush with a steel brush to see if i can remove the dark corrosion to see if that will let the bearing slide on and off satisfactorly.

also how do i remove the inner bearings outer race? i have punched the outside race off no worries as i can get a drift in there on the whole ring, but the inner race only has two notches to access the ring. ive tried a 2 jaw puller but it just pops off when i load it up.
