cheers mate,
I have decided to go completely stock on the intake.
Have you guys kept the black box/plenum thing on the intake near the throttle body or can i just run flexible tube (throttle body size) from the air box (in stock location) to throttle body?

FWIW, this is my setup:
2.5" tube from TB with a flex going into a VN airbox. No issues.

Any chance of getting a picture of how the VN airbox sits in there?

One I prepared earlier:
Wiper water reservoir fits in between the radiator and airbox. Airbox is held down with bolts through the guard.
The black box (intake resonator) on stock engines is to damp out any extra intake noise.

stock pipe is 500mm long including lap.
vn looks alot neater than stock, bet filters are a crapload cheaper too.

yamaha_308's intake will work very well. AFM still in the stock peice of pipe. around the stock distance away. With the advantage of better flow and more induction noise lol

yeah his intake looks good, i need to buy a new airbox so it seems a shame to hack it up just to use the part for the AFM. but in saying that the vn box looks alot better than the stock intake would.

sorry for being off topic but does any one know a part number or some where i can go buy the radiator hose off the shelf? im currently using a flexible univesal one which is turning to shit.. cheers

What radiator are you using? I had the original 22r radiator and now I have a v6 4runner radiator. Both radiators used the factory 3rz top radiator hose, available from toyota, bursons, repco ect

Do you think the 2.5" tube is a restriction? I have just got all the parts i need to replicate your setup, just need to decide on tube size, 2.5" or 3". What do you rekon?

The ID of 2.5" tube is same as the throttle body intake, so I wouldn't think so.

can anyone tell me the outside diameter of the stock 3rz intake pipe

bit of an update. My intake is now exactly the same as yamaha__308's. The problems i was describing have disapeared and motor runs perfectly. BUT it has gone backwards in power above 3500rpm. Before i changed the intake i needed to run at least 45psi just to get it to idle smoothly. Now that the intake is changed i can drop it to 20psi and it still idles smoothly. I seemed to regain some of the lost power when i dropped the fuel pressure to 35psi, i would like to return it to stock pressure to see what happens
Can anyone tell me what the standard fuel pressure is?

pretty sure (35psi) is standard i run mine at 40 with no issues and seems to pull pretty hard. Dave from team dgr has had his on a dyno as far as im aware, with the best results as far as hp goes at 40 but every engine is different.

im not sure why im down on power then? seems to be a flat spot after 3000rpm. It has nothing to do with the air box, i tried running without it and made no difference. I have two AFM's tried both and the problem is still there. If it was running out of fuel would the fuel pressure drop when i experience the flat spot?

If the pump cant keep up with the demand you will loose pressure, but i doubt that is the case.
Maybe the "loss" of power isnt actully a loss, just different power delivery than you were used to when it was running abit off, as you know have the power below 3000rpm, it may just be carrying threw the rev range now, were as b4, it went burrrrrrrrrrr bammmmmmmm.

yeah i did think about that but also had it give a small backfire this morning under heavy acceleration, its never done that before? I moved the fuel pump while i was doing the intake and had to change the supply hose to the pump. The hose i used seems to be flattened out a bit and i was thinking that may be starving the pump?
The power delivery seems to be hit and miss, sometimes its ok but most of the time it goes alright up to 3000rpm then its a massive flat spot all the way to the limiter. Running out of fuel? what else could cause this?

Backfired while you were still accelerating?
The hose that flattend out, this is the hose from the tank to pump correct? Dont know if youve covered it before, what is ur fuel system?

yeah mate, at the top of the rev range it gave off a fairly loud pop, has done it a couple of times since i did the airbox. It used to do it on deceleration in hot weather with the old setup but has never done it on acceleration until i changed the intake
Fuel system is lift pump to surge tank to msd High pressure pump running a malpassi fuel pressure reg (et on 32psi atm but was on 40psi) The flattened out hose is between surge tank and High pressure pump

The fuel pump im using has a 10mm inlet, i had 8mm hose forced over the 10mm fitting. I have changed it to 10mm hose feeding the pump, it has made a noticeable difference and i think im just not used to the change in power delivery since changing the intake. Not sure about the backfire i described?

The backfire has me confused also, no idea why it would do it. It isnt rev limiter?

when it dies after 3000 rpm until it hits limiter is this in 4x4 low? i noticed a big change when i sorted out my intake. it was as your explaining, took a bit to get used to it seemed to loose a bit of power in some places but gain lots more in others. it does seem like its dieing down after 3000rpm a little until limiter on road, but offroad in low its not noticable. have no idea why its backfiring on acceleration. does your oil smell like fuel?

Before today i had convinced myself it had just changed the power delivery but this morning i couldnt get it to hit the limiter in 2nd, flat out it just sat on 5000rpm and wouldn't rev any higher. Ive sorted out the fuel supply and changed the filter, i have a brand new VN v6 paper filter which should flow more air than the 2.8D airfilter i was using with my last setup?
A change of power delivery would be fine but after this morning im convinced its down on power, from about 3000rpm it just bogs down. What could cause this?

I paid more attention to what it was doin on the way home from work today, the power loss isnt all the time, sometimes i can go through gears and it seems normal to me. About 50% of the time it pulls up to 3000rpm then bogs down all the way to 5000rpm and thats as high as it will rev. Before i did the intake it would have no problem hitting the limitter in all gears except 5th. Seems strange becasue all ive done is change the intake, which to me should flow better than what i had before. The other 50% of the time its pulls harder than it did before i changed the intake through all gears.

Have you changed the spark plug leads? To me it sounds like they are leaking current and giving you poor spark.

i changed them about 12 months ago, might change them again. can anyone recomend a good set of leads?

Hey dillza, I'm going to be of absolutely no use, but just thought I'd chime in and say that I've had exactly the same problem with mine since the 3rz conversion, except my "wall" is at 4000rpm when about 60-70% of the time it has a flat spot, and the rest of the time it will rev out, except mine goes all the way to rev limiter...
I'm running dual fuel though, and it only has this problem on petrol, on gas it revs out fine so its not too much of an issue. Off road in low range the 4by revs out so quick that the flat spot isn't noticable. I know it isn't spark plugs or leads as these have been changed over several times with no difference.
So basically, as I said its of no help to your issue, but I'll be reading to see if anythings suggested that might help me

cheers mate at least im not the only one with this problem. Its strange i didnt have this problem before i changed the intake, it never had any problem reving in the past. This makes me think it has to be something to do with the intake but if anything it should have been an improvement. in saying that the new intake has made it run alot smoother.
