Today the tansfer case was exchanged for a one with Defender gears.
There is a big change.
The Disco is no longer a speed machine, it is more like a tractor
The torque convertor locks at 75 kph instead of 82.
At 80 kph it is doing 2,000 + RPM.
At 90 it is doing some thing like 2750 rpm.
At 100 kph the revs are around 2,800 rpm
110 kph is around 3,000 rpm.
End result, it flies through the gears and has unbelieable excelleration!
The speedo reading did not change??
In early March, we take off on a caravan tag-a-long tour, approx 2500km.
We will be home late March, early April, so I'll submit a report of pulling power and economy.
At the moment, it is no longer a high speed cuising machine, but, oddly enough, at 3,000rpm on the highway, the engine is VERY quiet??
No idea why!
Maybe it is pulling well at that speed and is not under any strain?
I don't know the answer.
All I can say is you cannot hear the motor, or the exhaust. Over and below, you can, but not at 3,000!
Cheers,
Ron

Be sure to keep us informed. Will be very interesting to hear what the fuel economy is like.
I would prefer the revs were a little lower but I'm very interested to hear the results.
Whatever happens you certainly won't have any trouble on the hills!

LT230 speedo drive is off the output gear, so the gear ratio inside doesn't matter. There are however speedo drive gears with different tooth counts, but these are interchangable so if the reading changed you can pull them out and swap them over.

Pity LR did not fix the error!
On my Discovery, the speedo is always 5 kph out, according to the GPS. 100kph on the speedo is 95 kph, true speed.
Cheers,
Ron

That's standard in every car.
Speedo's have to read under by law. 5% is the most common number, but some cars are out by 10% or more.
Funnily enough in cars with electronic trip computers the trip computer knows exactly what speed you are doing, the car just lies to you through the needle.

Hi Guys,
I have just returned from a 2,600 km Caravan trip.
We had head winds at some stages, lots of hills and mountain ranges and a few good flat smooth roads.
Most of the time, on good roads, I sat on 100 to 105 kph, pulling the 15' Pop Top Caravan.
Poor roads, 90 to 95kph.
At 2,500 rpm to 2,750 rpm, the Disco pulled the best.
Up hills at 3,400 rpm, it pulled really well.
For the first time since I have had this vehicle, it was easy to drive, pulling a caravan, without having to contantly drop back to third to gain lost speed.
(That normally happened a lot in head wind)
The fuel consumption for the whole trip averaged at 20.5 lt per 100 km. Worst was 22, driving up through Cunninghams Gap, from Brisbane to warwick.
Best 19 travelling on flat roads at 100 kph, with of course, van in tow.
(Previously, 24 was common on head winds and hills, with 19 on the flats)
Overall, I'm very happy with the switch from a Disco geared transfer case to a Defender geared case.
When we get the new Caravan, I'll be most likely sitting on 90-100 kph, which is ideal for this gearing.
BTW, before we left, I did notice that the Disco was slightly better on fuel around town, than before.
I think the Torque lock up at 70 kph instead of 80, may also help.
Cheers,
Ron

has anyone simply replaced the engine managment system with aftermarket??
was thinking with better engine control more horsepower may ba achieved with a better combustion. as we all know the standard setup always blows black smoke

has anyone fitted a v6 to their landrover?
im now toying with the idea to put either a holden alloytec or a toyota 4 litre
both weigh less,
have more horsepower and torque,
will bring the weight off the front axle and make it more central,
and cheaper rego and insurance.
