But way it up, do you want comfort, ac, closed cab with mod cons etc etc or stick it out with the bare bones 40?
I used to own a zook that was locked and lifted and rough as guts. Loved it to bits but started thinking more like you are now. Moved onto a lux ( yeah real big step up haha) which was more comfy and had a few more mod cons like ac and power steer. best move ever
I think comparing a zook to a 40 is blasphemy! You're not just talking about sentimental value, you're talking about a piece of motoring history and good ones will become harder and harder to find in good condition in years to come. The zook is a great fourby, don't get me wrong, no comparrison to a 40. Just my opinion.
Nah I wasnt comapring the 2 mate. I was trying to compare going from something with no mod cons and stepping into something a little newer

Everytime I've sold an older car I was slightly attatched too I've regretted it.
Next holidays hire a GU and get the missus to drive the entire time... seriously try harder to convince her a GU is what she needs!

had a heavily modded Zuk .. spring over 35s etc was fun when it was running .. but it was frequently not. I purchased a GU and loved it to bits .. it was so nice to get in, have tonnes (compared to a Zuk) of power, icy cold AC etc and know that I could readily head to basically anywhere in the county be it the cross town drive to work or the oodnadatta track with the extra prep work being the addition of the fridge and extra clothes..

Love_mud that is what I want... something that I can drive daily to work and still be respectable and tidy, but also take camping, touring and mild 4x4'ing without any question that it'll go the distance.
I just wish GU's had better engine choices... the 3.0L D is too dodgy, the 2.8L TD seems underpowered, the 4.2TD is too rare and $$$, and the petty motors are epically thirsty

Keep the 40, buy a diesel GQ and get over your distaste for them. Practical, comfy, cheap, plenty of aftermarket goodies, go anywhere touring wise. A well maintained GQ with a nice set of rims look plenty respectable.
As soon as I bought a daily and retired the 40 to more serious business in the bush, I loved the chances I got to drive the 40 more.
BTW $6k for a BJ40 - dreaming.

Have you seen the going rate of some of the FJ's and BJ's on ebay / carsales lately? You might be surprised...

Thats true, one with minimal/no rust in good conditon would be worth somewhere in that price range I reckon.

well mine has no rust, has very conservative mods - compared to the custom trucks on carsales for example...

get a GQ,
mick wat are you worried about the "bogan" stigma attached to them... you are the Poster boy!!!!!
GQ's tuff as nails, and can come with all the creature comforts(elec windows, dual zone aircon, factory locker, pleather). I've set mine up as a bi-polar weekend weapon / tourer and i drive it everyday.
and still had change from 10k
dont be a girl, sell the 40 and come to the dark side!

A diesel patrol (4.2) is almost as simple mate - no computers in sight but plenty more creature comforts.

Not too keen on 100 series, I think for the same price I prefer the look of the GU's...
When I got rid of the Mav', that was my plan too!! (Get a Zook and put hilux diffs under it etc etc etc!!)
Instead, I 'adopted' the family bus (bought brand new!) 2001 ZD30 GU as my next project with a decidedly more touring focus than the Mav' ever was. I still enjoy the occasional 'day out' at LCMP and Elimbah (and with a 2" lift and 305/16 Big Horns, it's surprisingly GOOD!).
Even compared with the Mav' (let alone a 40!!), the GU is a good civilised car and the PERFECT basis for a (very very capable off roader) and tourer. Parts are plentiful and relatively cheap now that the GU is over 10 yrs old and compared with 'Yota's (flame me now!!!) are very difficult to break.
I miss the Mav' every once in a while, (everyone harbours dreams of keeping their cars for their sons, but insurance, rego costs + difficulty of storage for those of us who live in the 'burbs make this a dream!!) but part of 'growing up' is moving on to something different. Sell the 40 to a young bloke who'll absolutely LOVE it and buy the GU. You won't regret it!

Perfect! That's what I wanted to hear...
Also, I work in an office environment, where I have to visit clients from time to time - the 40 isn't cut out for this!

LOL I use my Gu for the same thing... But today im in a mates LWB sierra... similarly not cut out for clients - the term should we nick down and grab a coffee while we discuss... has just been replaced with 'Do you take instant coffee'?
The GU gets filthy on the days off and with a pressure hose off and a different set of shoes becomes the work truck again monday morning.

I'm sick of wearing my suit in the elements going to and from work in the door-less & (practically) roof-less 40
your smoking some serious crack here... gu's are neither comfy nor nice as a daily. go test drive one back to back with a 100 or even an 80... or a disco... or a rangie...
or why not save a little dosh and get a cheap knock about for a daily??? the money you save on fuel will pay the extra rego...

My Gu is my daily and is much nicer than an 80 I used for awhile by a long shot. Can easily drive for 8-10 hours in it and be fine at the end of the day.

I think you've only ever driven shitter GUs. 97 to 2001 GU was a bit rough and lacking int he NVH department. Series 3 they started taking NVH seriously.
A mate just bought an 03 auto grenade ST and its great. Rides like a boat, but Original suspension at 160,000km will do that. Heaps more comfortable and tighter feeling than a clunker old LC80 or Disco.

all the ones i'd driven were 05 onwards, all diesels, mostly st's (the ones with the boxy flairs) and all had under 60 thou on the clock.
