Transfer Case Of Choice

Wooders, I wasn't suggestingthat the NV4500 was cheap. i was suggesting that the LT230 T/case was strong enough to cope with 6.5 litres of diesel engine driving through the nv4500 5.6:1 first gear ratio.
I got the impression, maybe incorrectly, thet Bubs was thinking cheap as in under $1k all up ready to adapt, without having to spend hundreds more for lower ratio gear sets, stronger shafts etc etc. Bill.

It has just occurred to me. If you apply the handbrake on a fulltime four wheel drive Landrover and let the clutch out in low 1 with a few revs up, only the front wheels will be driven, due to the action of the centre differential, so effectively this is equivelant to disconnecting rear drive, with the exception that the overall gear ratio is halved.
ie, instead of being say 44:1, it is only 22:1, but because you are only driving the front wheels it should be enough to make those tigh turns that Wendle mentioned. LT230 is definately the go!
Bill.

correct bill.... Sam has been doing front digs i.e. driving through the side gears of the centre diff for some time now and a few of us lt230 owners have also.... he has been trying to break it but has not yet been successful
... centre diff unlocked... handrake on... accelerate and turn.... works very well

Thanks Landyman, I dare say that on a Landy with transmission handbrake it works better than a vehicle with rear wheel handbrake because on the landy you are locking the rear propshaft, not the rear spider gears, so when you are making a tight left turn for example, the left rear wheel can roll backwards while the right rear wheel can roll forwards, thus sharpening the turn even more ?
Yes, the LT230 seems like the go alright.

add a JB conversions upgrade kit you get 4:1 and the strength that will give an atlas a good run for its money at about half the price
twin stick options are cheap and you can even fab these yourself to give 4hi 4lo 2 hi 2 lo combinations
after that most of the new process boxes are pretty good but weigh a ton and dont have as many after market upgrade options
Where am I going to find and how much am I going to pay for a D300
since your in qld check out Hammonds Jeep and Jeeepart recyclers price NFI but real 4x4's already have them
Bubs under $1000 is cheap for the D300, they gor for up to $2k, so not worthwhile, parts are hard and a 4:1 kit is over $600US you need output upgrades and on and on, before you even hit the strength and they are cast, so heavy bastards, a hilux case will be fine in your rig, 42s, heavy pedal, and stupid me, is killing them, i think it would be fine in anything else.

hands and mums dont count!!!
ok guys can some one answer these questions

All Defenders and Discoveries, 110's from 1985/86 on, and Range Rovers from 1984? till whenever they changed to the crappy chain driven T-case. If you buy a late model disco one it doesn't have the centre diff lock - you have to make or buy an aftermarket one and fit it yourself.

If anyone has a source to ship Dana 300's from the US to aus they only sell for US$50-200 in good condition.
Hammonds has quoted me $700 for one locally available and mentioned they were getting 6 of them in, but everytime I ask they have not arrived yet.
Find a 1980-1986 jeep CJ in a junkyard and you should find a Dana300.
The 1980 model is actually a little shorter than the other years.
The output upgrades are not needed until you are into very bi horsepower and tyre range. A lot of people out there are running them without the upgrades and they do just fine. For peace of mind you can upgrade them to virtually atlas 2 strength

cheers

I have been browsing the LandRover forum on Pirate and the subject of transfercases has come up a few times. The general consensus seems to be that because the Lt230 has bigger gears is stronger than the Dana 300 or Atlas. Although I voted for the LT230 on this thread, I do not agree that it is stronger than the others . The reason I say this is that because the front and rear output shafts on the LT230 are in the same line, all the required torque to drive both diffs is being transmitted through 1 set of gears, wheras the centred rear output and offset front output of the Dana and Atlas mean that they have two sets of high and lowrange gears meshing with 1 intermediate gear, thereby effectively doubling the strength of the geartrain. Its similar to a 2 pinion diff verses a 4 pinion one. Having said that I still think the Lt230 is the best allround choice for the money.. Bill.
