holeyhardtop wrote:So did you have to pay any customs tax etc in australia? this is an area that is a bit confusing to me.
so the customs value is the tyre cost only, not including the postage cost?
someone mentioned something about a $1000 limit tax free? is this correct? so if i was to go over this limit then would it make sense to get say my family to also import the tyres and spread the limit around a bit?
any thoughts
Thats what I was wondering ...the quotes I got were both over 1000 dollars delivered, hence over the grand thresh-hold....still the pricing seems competitive but thats not knowing what the actual charges would be ontop?
If the charges raise the total amount to that which is close to local pricing is it really worth the effort in the end?

If you want true sizing the Kelvar MTR is currently only tyre that is, from what I've seen.

Word of warning don't go over $1000!!! it could cost you alot, did i mention a heck of alot.
You have to pay gst, duty, clearance fees, charges and taxes on said fees and charges.
The states is free trade with aus so no duty?... but this actually depends on the products origin of manufacture. get japanese made tyres from the states... pay the duty on japanese tyres.
Word of warning. all taxes and fees are calculated on the landed cost or perceived value of the shipment... this is where it gets grey. Its unlikely they would bother but if the tyres have a value of $1600 here but only cost you $900 it is possible (though unlikely) that they could tax you based on their local value. I think you could argue out of it and its unlikely but worth noting.
The other term landed value is important as the landed value includes shipping costs. as this is what it worth here. So really any shipment over $1000 total value can be held for customs. and you pay gst on the freight as well.
I know several people who bought from the states over the $1000 limit - 1 knew he would have to pay gst as his mate had told him and was ok with that, the other had no idea.
The first one was expecting to pay $180 gst on his $1800 purchase - all up after all fees and charges it cost him $2600. his mate didn't know about all the other costs.
The second guy was getting a free kayak sent out from the uk - he was getting it free as he did the design work for the company. - zero invoice or 'customs value' and 400 quid shipping. Customs view was that nothing is worth nothing, They didn't care what he paid for it they wanted to know what it was worth in the real market. about $1000 of fees and taxes later he got his boat out as it was viewed as being worth $3000 inc shipping.
My sister got scuba gear sent out in two shipments ordered 1 week apart - the suppliers sent them as one lot LOL they were being helpful and saving her freight... still got through ok. some are lucky some are not.
I'm totally not saying don't buy from the states but if your going over the limit then get separate shipments, i would get them sent 2 weeks apart. personally i would get rims fitted without valves to reduce the cubic size and get 2 rims and 2 tyres sent out per shipment. just an idea.
*Disclaimer* Alot of stuff gets through without being slammed but it does happen, alot of the difficulty is that not many clearance companies want to deal in private import customers.

gixxerpilot wrote:flexytj wrote:bfg no longer e mark their tyres sold in america so that other markets can distinguish
them in the case of warranty and balance issues and deny any chance of a warranty claim .
That's pretty much the same with most tyre companies - anything imported outside of the manufacturers own imports generally won't have a warranty attached. Why would they honor a warranty for a tyre that might not even be designed for our conditions? Most tyre companies (Michelin, BFG, Bridgestone etc) have documented cases where a tyre has failed and been brought in for warranty only to find it was an outside (we call the Parallel) import and not ADR compliant. Seen a write-off insurance claim knocked back for this very reason. Add to this the fact that a lot of imported tyres can be several years old when they get to you, severly reducing their usable life. The rubber is generally dead within 5-6 years, depending on the compound.
So it can be worth spending the extra dollars in Oz, you get warranty, dealer support, and most tyre stores are happy to help out with any balancing issues that arise with tyres they fit. Plus you're helping a local keep his job, rather than some
fat yocal seppo.
Bloody fat yocal seppo's; -sad part is we are currently beating the seppo's in the race to be the worlds fattest nation

Sorry to drag this up once again. I have had a quote from tirerack for some bfg km2's
32 x 10.5 x 15 - Set of 5 $990 + $525 for shipping
33 x 12.5 x 15 - Set of 5 $1050 + $572 for shipping
Has any one brought these in recently? Can anyone give me a definative answer as to whether I am going to have to pay any other fees or charges on these quotes or is this to my door with nothing more to pay?
Thanks

Anyone know the difference between FIP and FIE? $900 is a big difference for two days!
And how did you guys pay for them, Western Union?
Will get a quote for a split order (3 + 2) to get it under the $1000, or shouldn't I bother?

Seperate shipping 3 and 2 under 1k will make it dear. Really depends on how much you can get them here for?
I had to pay them direct transfer (IBT-International bank transfer)through the bank. No other option.

Get them sent to a freight forwarding company if you dont need them asap, just be mindful most freight forwarding collect items for a month then send so you may need to order 2 seperate lots a month apart or use 2 different companies.

BlueSuzy: You should have bought a containers worth. You could have sold them all by now and you would have made anice tidy little profit for your time and effort. Heck, isn't that what Pete Antunac originally did to setup OPW?
400k from Sydney. Local price, not fitted:
35x12.5/r15 BFG KM2: $486.00 each.

I paid $1300 including freight for 5 BFG KM2s in 33x10.5x15. Value for customs purposes was $800 so I didn't get stung any gst, duty etc. Freight was $500. Plus I got the tyres in 8 days as opposed to never if I were to try and buy them here. Michelin's handling of BFG in Australia leaves a lot to be desired and I have no qualms getting my BFGs from the U.S in light of this.

Actually its about as thick as my old km1s. I actually don't like the km2s. As my cars not going to be doing any stupidly hard stuff off road then the bighorns are perfect.
