I know it's on the cards for me as i'll be regularly towing heavy and needing to do a bit of reversing in low range for control and clutch happyness. But low range in the HDJ100 automatically locks the centre diff and then you get transmission wind up and becomes a prig of a thing on solid ground.

Do a search on lcool.
On the 80 series theres a "pin 7" mod that disables the automatic center diff actavation.
Meaning the center diff only actavates when the button is pushed.
Maybe the 100 series has the same mod.

Edit: done the search for ya.

also if your 100 check where the abs sensor is.
on the full time ones they pick up off a ring on the cv and if you go part time it wont work properly and the light will be on the dash. could lead into possible insurance problems if an accident did occur as you have changed the vehicle braking system.

Yep, the same can be done with the 100series, it's a 20minute job.

Folks, having been helping people buy and sell some 80 series of late the drive line noises, particularly the front end has some of these folks again raising the part time kit question to me. Some of these machines 200 000 -350 000. The 35K0 one after gbox and diff rebuilds still drives ok but whines like casey chambers giving birth
so its certainly past the point of return mst likely but the 200k one is just starting to make some noises.
Now almost all the reading certainly suggest its not worth the effort but just wanted some updated views ??
Assuming the kit is still $5-600 ish so be $1000 k as said fitted on a car worth $12 doesnt really add up i guess. So is there such a thing as one of these that has 3-500 000kms thats drive line isnt noisy as sin??

Most of the above discussion is 2 weeks old so would say its fairly updated.
I don't think it's worth it at all.
My 105 didn't have any driveline noise with 280k kms so do not think the constant 4wd is the issue

Lack of servicing is the issue I recon.
I replaced my wheel bearing grease at 40k and it was dry as a bone - shit Toyota grease was so hard it sat between the two bearings and hadn't ever melted in. It was hard to dig out and clean.
I would imagine this is used in all toyotas and when the dealer "services" (they do NOTHING), they never re pack anything! Mate that worked at the local Toyota dealer said they often wipe the oil filter clean rather than replace it. I asked about servicing all the 40k items like wheel bearings, cv's etc. and he laughed like crazy....They will last 150klms or 3 years without servicing them so why would we? he said.
After doing my major service myself, I cannot see a dealer doing it.
cheers bru

I have a 92 factory turbo 80s, about 3 years ago I put in a DX transfer case & aisin free wheeling hubs & got a 40mm longer & bigger dia. custom rear tail shaft made, would have used the dx tail shaft but wreakers had bent it.
My 80s drives sweet as, don't have any problems after doing this mod. I used to have really bad back lash when it was full time, that is the main reason for me wanting part time. probably one of the best mods I have done to my 80s.
Cost me $900 for transfer case & free wheeling hubs from all 4x4 parts, wreakers at minden.
custom tail shaft $390 from driveline at Archerfield, bent that one
so had new one made at Queensland engineering service in Toowoomba cost $520
Just done my mates 95 F/T 80s a few months ago for the same reason & it drives sweet now.
My wife's brother in-law has also done this mod to his 92 F/T 80s ute & it drives great as well.
If any one was wondering you can do this mod to the fzj80 as well, coz they have the same gearbox as the hdj80, the gear box is a H151f.
But it really comes down to personal preference each to there own.
hope this is helpful

I considered this option with my 91 factory t/d 80 as well. I drove it for ages as full time until curiosity got the better of me regarding the part time as well.
I put free wheeling hubs on ..those junk AVM things..never again prefer factory Toyota ones if you can get them..anyhow.
I took out the front drive shaft and engaged the centre diff and yes I noticed a difference iin the attitude of the 80.
I had a 3 inch lfit + poly spacers of 1 inch to level the front to the back to get the rake out of it...33 bfg muds steel arb winch bar and a kaymar tyre bar on the back and I had caster adjustment bushes in the front.
The only reason I mention this is its about the weight proportioning of the vehicle and the mass variance over the tyres, which equalled out when you consider the option s fitted
Anyways...in full time 4x4 it had the clunks and bangs because the early one didn't have the viscus coupling in the centre and the flanges were a little worn as well. However allot of this could be rectified by adjusting ones driving style. feed it the clutch and no more banging.
When I took the front shaft out..yes it felt like it had more power ( imho) but the front end got light. It tracked poorly and the bum would drift around a little in wet weather so straight away you had a confidence issue and had to slow down even more..In full time 4x4 I slowed down for nothing. Tyre wear will always be a point of contention. Tyres pressures, heat, wheel alignment, vehicle mass, and the fat bastard in the drivers seat will all come Into play on this matter. Not all tyres will go 400 -500 k's at a stretch without shredding some rubber...RE; heat issue..
Personally for me at the end of the day.. full time benefits far outweigh the lack luster feel of partime. If you have a full time issue..sort it out and it will most likely cost you less that the part time mod and time consumption involved albeit you haven't lifted you truck half way to the heavens

I bought my 105 series with the part time kit in the transfer. I then unplugged the plug on top of the transfer that locks the center diff when I go into low range. Now I can have low range 2wd so I can back the trailer / boat etc without bind in the transfer. I now see that Marks Adaptors are now doing a ABS relocation kit for the ABS sensor so the 105 series can now fit manual locking hubs and still retain ABS. Great idea.
I yet to get manual locking hubs and I don't know if I will.
I have a question that I haven't found an answer to... Can I fit 80 series Longfield 30 spline kit in my 105 series and fit 80 series locking hubs?? The only problem I can see is the 10mm studs that 105 series have compaired to the 8mm studs of an 80 series...
