I like this idea, but couldn't find anywhere with these types of hooks or links. Tried Bunnings, Elders, etc. Do I have to go through a truck supplies place for rigging such as these or will a 4WD shop have what I want?

A rigging shop will have them all and they will be pretty cheap too,
Look up "Noble's" in your capital city or just search the yellowpages for rigging suppliers.

Just picked up one of these http://www.jackmate.com/jackmate.htm from tjm this morning for 60bucks.

hopefully this will be more useful than just a winch if required.

couple of those photos look pretty dodgy. especially this one



You would be much better off putting a shackle through the high lift's tongue rather than looping it around - imagine if your load moves/falls in a hole that could slip pretty easily

I used to make up and sell Hi-Lift winching kits,as stated I got all the parts from rigging shops.
I used to drill the bottom oval hole to 5/8" and put a 5/8 shackle through it
and then feed the pull chain through this shackle as a guide to stop the chain falling off the jacks foot.
I would not rely on a shackle through the jacks foot as it is only a casting and not very thick.I had several different Hi-Lift castings back, broken,
under warrenty and some of them looked very poor quality.

There are some pretty Grimace setups out there, but I would be confident in the one that was posted previously. However would still like to use all of my equipment in the event that both the hand winch and hi-mount fail.
