I only ever used the cheapest unleaded fuel i could find for my Feroza, never once put PULP in it, and i also never once had a detonation problem.

Yes, it's a strange one that. Mine has a problem, and a friend bought one new back in '96 and I remember him having problems with pinging from day one. Other people on WARFS have similar problems too :? Mine only does it on warm days and up hills (one steep hill in particular I drive up everyday.) It could be a build up of carbon in the combustion chambers which water injection should clean out.

Anyway, I'm getting all the bits together and will give it a go. The pressure pump has arrived (one used in 12v portable agricultural sprayers) and I "manufactured" most of the adaptor mount for the spray nozzle today.

I'm looking into programmable microcontrollers for running the show using TPS, MAP and revs for trigger levels and pulse width modulating the water supply via a solenoid to control the water flow. That's in the long term anyway- I'll use something simpler to start with....

The Megasquirt would work, but is more complex than I need. Plus I don't think normal injectors would like water going through them for too long!?

dont knock it till you have tried it at first when i was reading up i thought fuck this aint gonna work then after i fitted it added 15 degrees advance and took my car for a spin i was shocked no pinging more power and standard ulp works wonders and my inlet and head are spotlessly clean when i stripped the engine after a fitting a new one with lots less kays

Exactly- it's nothing new and has been around for a long time.

What sort of set up did you use pcman?

i just had a standard windscreen washer bottle hooked up to a mist jet above the carby 2ndary intake and had it operated by a microswitch on the secondary opening on the carby worked quite well considering it only cost me about 20bux im sure a better setup with higher pressure pump would be heaps better mine used too much water way too much water

this was setup on my cortina 250xflow alloy head it used to ping lots if i ever put the foot down but after playing with the water setup it was great :)

ok then, i'll give it a crack.... i'm going to try it once i get the valve clearnces done as they are huge at the moment.

So whats the easiest way to set it up??? this is for a L28 engine

Check out some of the links posted earlier.

Easiest way to do it is to use a hyperdermic needle on the end of some hose and insert it into one of the vacuum lines on the air filter side of the throttle butterfly. When the engine is revved it should generate enough vacuum to suck water up through the needle. You need to find a vacuum source just near the throttle butterfly when it cracks open.

I tried that set up on my Feroza without much success as I didn't have access to a suitable vacuum inlet.

The other method is to use a windscreen washer motor and activate it off a microswitch on the throttle somewhere. You then need to find a suitable misting nozzle etc. I'm going one step further with a proper pressure pump and misting nozzle. I should have a rough system running in the next week or two (hopefully....)

A couple of guys at work were talking about this sort of system a few years back. One said he'd had success with a windscreen washer bottle and a small length of PVC tube across the inlet tract. Just keep pricking more pin holes in the PVC tube until you get the desired effect.

A lot of trial and error, but it sounds pretty simple.

Good luck,

Scott

have recently fitted water injection to my supercharged petty hilux, works really well to cool the air so far. I am currently running it on the airfilter side and sucking into s.c. but am also going to try using it on the charged air side. or maybe even one sprayer on either side of s.c. havent tried it on methanol/water mix yet just staight water.

Pongo is the system you're talking about operated by vacuum or a pressure pump?

Sounds interesting Dave.... I only had problems with pinging with normal unleaded. Generally ran Shell Optimax in the Feroza, with no pinging probs unless timing was not perfect. It was better after I had the head done. SO your idea of the carbon built up is probably correct. But from memory build up was top of pistons, not so much the valves. I still had hone marks after 280,000k's.

Anyway, your ideras and electronic knowledge baffle me. Keep up the good work!!!
