the defender racing with the 4 speed was blowing second gear

Yes he was using the taper roller conversion and one piece cross shaft

some "experts" were saying that because you are spinning the gears so fast not all the oil stays and hence you blow the gears as they run nearly dry

A lot of the rough stuff is done flat out second high and pulling out of tight corners so not suprising really. He is running a 500hp rodec and ive seen is snap front maxidrive axles like a twig so Im not that suprised that the 4 speed doesnt hold up

The Nissan GQ box seems to be third gear that blows up in both Nissans and Rovers that I race against

Thats why I went auto but it obviously comes with other complications

Hopefully this time its sorted.

I dont want to speak to soon but I may have cured the torqueflite.

I finished a race on the weekend 360kms of thrashing the crap out of the car and the gearbox survived.

So the latest round of modications were

1) Manual Valve body to eliminate slip on high speed changes ( and you can drive the landie harder)

2) custom sump and twin heavy duty cooler on the roof with an electric pump hold 22lt on tranmission oil in total

3) one way valves to prevent cavities in cooling system

4) Deepen pick up in the sump

5) Use Penrite 10/10th trans fluid

6) Soften up torque coverter so shifts as softer ( Now 11" convertor)

7) Modify Torque convertor for strength ( Centre Bearing etc)

Im alreay using Rear bolt in Spag, Heavy duty clutches and bands and steel caged planet gears

Lets hope it continues
