aluminium seems to work well, had 4 year old Al rad in the VN made in Asia, leaked recently due to fracture in the side tank where it mounts. So just got another for 150 bucks delivered off Ebay. At that price why bother with anything else??

PS key to long-life and good cooling is to ensure rust/corrosion don't happen, and the car electrics are properly earthed at all times.

Interesting that this thread has popped back up after a couple of 37 to 40 degree days!!!

I found myself on Geelong Rd (very flat highway) enjoying A/C on full and running on gas until around about werribbee when the temp guage started to climb. I had to lose the Air-con and run petrol to keep the needle below almost max.

At 100km/h I would have thought that even a sub-standard cooling system would still be OK. Would a custom alloy radiator make a substantial difference? The radiator and engine were both rebuilt 1 year ago. The only other factor I can think of is the bodylift: does it matter where the intake is in relation to the engine?

Any info appreciated

Sorry about all my posts but i had the same problem as V8 Middy. My GQ would get mainly at freeway speeds and like others i thought that the fan played a pretty minor role at those speeds.

Well after fixing my hub it now sits below 1/2 at freewy speeds in 40+ degrees and u can her the fan!!

I'm not sure if this is cause by the layout of the gq as previous cars i ahve owned would never use the thermo fan above 60-70km/hr

A mate has a VL with a 333 VN headed stroker that runs consistant 10.6 passes and is still street driven daily and only runs the factory radiator and the factory viscus fan.No electric fans.
you dont need extra cooling on a v8 that uses nitrous on the track :)

yeah what i meant is nitrous does not require extra cooling capasity. to get a 333 to 10 secs, i would gather he has a largeinsh shot of NOS :)
