i cut down a drivers side door, folded a lip on the cut edge and riveted soft sheet tin/aluminium. droopypete might have some pics.

don't cut your hinges. just replace the screws with hex head bolts. if you can't undo the screws, apply direct heat to break the thread locking glue.

I cut right on the high side of that crease, the C channel sat slightly higher
