Tony,
Dont the GQ cv's use a bigger ball, and the star is thinner between the ball and the internal spline? I haven't double checked this, but thats what I was told.
CORE GQ cv's apparently break the star before the bell or stub shaft fails from the conversation I had on the phone with them.
Doesn't make much sense to bugger around adapting stuff if you can treat a GQ cv and make it workable.

Cheers
Daryl

Thanks Daryl im only going on what i have also been told reguarding the Star. I guess i will know in a day or 2 when these CVs arrive.

From the CORE CVs i have seen break it was the Stub axle that failed.

Will see how we go anyway. Im not saying we have the answer for the strength issue in any CVs yet but we have defianatly made them a lot stronger and i beleive we are offering them at a resonable price.

Just had a look at a yota and GQ cv. They have the same size balls/stars. The GQ bell is 94.00mm od, yota is 90.00mm. Stub shaft minimum dia behind the splines on GQ is 30.00mm, yota is 31.50mm.
So, being that they are both made by NTN, the material is probably the same, so a GQ bell should be able to be made stronger than a yota bell, but the stub shaft is always going to be ~5% weaker due to its smaller dia.

SO, if haultech can successfully treat stock yota cv's to survive XX" tyres and XXXX kg rigs, driven hard, they should also be able to do the same with GQ items?

Want another pair of GQ cv's Tony? History unknown.... Can have them at your door in a couple of days. You just need to find a test mule and give me a treated set of cv's after you've got it all sorted and I'll pay the $.

Cheers
Daryl

the bell rarely breaks anyway. the only time i have broken the bell is due to forcing steering after the star/race has already exploded.
at least if the stub axle breaks first, you don't ruin the inner axle as well. inner oil seals will last a lot longer as well.

the standard GQ inner fits into the toyota star anyway. so no custom axle is needed.

the boys at hightech4x4 in penrith can get cromoly axles, cvs and hubs billeted up from the states apparently there unbrakable. i think they even come with a warranty brake it and they replace it. dont hold me to that though i think the price were like $1000 for a pair of cvs /axle /hubs so around $3000 all up. contact ben or chris from hightech4x4 for detailes 0247217783. cheers

i thought i'd post some photos of gq cvs

haultech treated on the left, stock gq on the right

a different stock gq one where the bell did not hold up

with stock cvs, usually the star fails. but i've also had cases where the star was intact but the bell disintergrated. also broken a short side inner.
never broken a cv stub axle (but have seen this happen). never broken a long side cv or axle.

so anyone done it?

The NEW cro-mo longs are supposed to be the same strength as a stock 35 spline d60 uni. Way stronger than a modified stock nissan CV. And they come with a larger 1.31" 30 spline outer shaft.
Something will still end up breaking, at the next weakest link.
My mate runs old style AVM hubs as sacrificial lambs because if somethings gonna break its them and they are cheap and easy to replace.

don't know if they will fit inside the gq knuckle to be honest

i should do this experiment actually, i have a spare gq diff with no cvs and now i have fj80 parts aplenty too

bolt on spacer required to adapt Late model70 series AISIN hubs (same size/dia and bolt pattern) and change the brass top-hat bush. this would allow the use of 27spline chromo cv's with nissan std inner axles!!! Yes it will be way stronger than a GU but then all you will do is keep snapping the std inners as they are smaller in diameter than stock toyota's??

Yeah, it works, but you wouldn't bother now that you can buy a cr-mo cv off the shelf that slides right in and has a stronger inner axle.

They are not bolt in for GQ Leaf.
