I have an 04 GU wagon and just curious how much better it is to run one of these donaldson pre-cleaners under the engine bay are they worth it....

give much power or barely noticeable.

Easiest way to tell, would be to fit a restriction gauge in the intake system. Try fitting it before the aircleaner, then after it, then with the snorkel disconnected to see if its the snorkel or the aircleaner that is restricting things.

After reading your posts on the performance of your rig with the turbo and exhaust mods, I'd say go for the bigger aircleaner for sure. Bevan Butler runs a decent sized one in his GU ute.....was set up by JPC I think??

Don't think you will find big power gains from using a larger aircleaner, but if the engine was getting "only just enough" air with a standard filter, any dust/dirt/mud/leaves clogging the filter is going to make it marginal! Starting big will give you more of a comfort zone.

Your comp truck is putting out big power. How long has it been set up like this for. Any bad signs from the engine yet. Have you increased your max rpm. Because I know some bkokes over east are revving them to 6000rpm!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. I think thats a bit much and maybe noy needed. Do you know what rpm is on your comp truck

The race truck has only been set up like this for about 18 months and its starting to get a bit tired . In all fairness, the speedo reads 190,000kms.....and it hasn't worked for the last 12 months, so add on another 40,000kms. Plus its a very dodgy Jap Import, so has probably done over 330,000kms. The general condition of the rest of the truck (prior to racing it) supports that theory too.

It regularly breaks injector springs now, so keep a spare rebuilt injector in the glove box, takes 5 mins to change. Propane injection will probably kill it (if we don't sell it first), but have to remember its a bog standard non-turbo engine with no engine mods . The guy in Wellington getting 322HP at the wheels stripped his down a few months ago....it was getting rattly and he gave it a birthday after 270,000kms. The hone marks were still clear on the cylinder liners, with no damage or wear on the rods/pistons. He rolled in a new set of big end bearings, reco-ed the injectors and its all good.

Haven't increased the max rpm, its still limited to 4200 or 4500 or something?? Interestingly, I just got off the phone to Davesh from West End Diesel (very helpful fella), he asked the same question and apparently 6 grand is quite achievable from it. He was talking about long distance / high speed events though...certainly not winch challenge stuff . We're getting max torque at around 3600rpm, so its kept at 3200-4000rpm range.

Another mates truck (with an auto) revs out to 5500 with no probs so far. Only time will tell though ;-)

no problems am changing my ratios this friday to 4.6 and i'll see how that goes i'll ask diesel tech if he wants to put it on his dyno.

but will speak to JPC now about pre-cleaners.

Its hard to get your head around the fact that even though the pump is delivering more fuel, you're actually using less. Its just because you're sitting at about 1/4 -1/3 throttle at 100km/hr instead of 1/2 throttle with the standard pump that the fuel consumption doesn't suffer.

I would certainly recommend doing the Toyota 80 series pump mod to your Nissan pump.....its just like turboing it again!!

Just wanted to say that I am agree with GQ TROL on this one.

In my country the only option was RD28T. Everything is bigger on it, turbo, IC, exhaust, twin airfilter setup, more boost, bigger intake, Daikin clutch, Powershot 2000 propane-kit.
And the pumpmods. It`s a new distributorhead with 12mm plunger from
a 5,7 l MAN truck. It is set up to deliver around 90 cc of fuel, capable of 120cc though.
I didn`t believe you could get so much torque from a 2,8, std. gearing and 37" tires, no problem. Like GQ TROL said, just like turboing it again and again!!

Don`t use it very much, spend most of the time modifying it, still wants
power.
Have VDO pyrometer to monitor EGT.

With the power/torque your TD42 puts out , it must be awsome to drive.

After all this talk about modifying cams, we finally got off our chuffs and sent one away to a local cam grinder to have a play with it. The engine had done 137,000kms and had been reasonably well maintained. However, the cam grinder commented that it had noticable (but uniform) wear on all faces which he thought was common for this engine even though it had done little mileage.

Got the re-ground cam back yesterday and there didn't appear to be any significant difference when we measured it with the verniers. Placed it in the couple of V blocks and cycled it, and was obvious it had stacks more lift......4mm or so!! Duration had been left the same though.

Is an easy enough job to replace when the engine is sitting on the bench. The front cover and sump have to come off as the sump bolts at the front go through the bottom of the front cover. Not sure how you would change the cam with engine in place as the A/C condensor would be a PITA to work around.

Will be a while before we know if it has made any difference, as this engine is going in the new race truck which is only consists of a chassis and running gear at the moment
