2 gear boxes
1 engine 3 cracked and 1 holed piston
4 transfer case prop seals
3 or 4 ac compressors
leaky sump (they all do)
clutch was almost done at 55,000kms
cracked flywheel (oil filled)
3 or 4 AF sensors
leaky intercooler (they all do)

diffs were good though ;)

turbo needed a full rebuild at 80,000kms when it was taken off the motor due to the amount of stress it is under

in the end EVERY time i went away it had issues

i stopped going 4wding and it still played up so off it went out of my hands

hi all what a hot topic...i have driven the 3.0 many times and wow what a gr8 engine..no dout.

I personally have allways wanted a 3.0t/d and loved it no matter what pple saying bout them...............but i must admit seems the engine is allways working hard even in day to day driving.relies heavily on the turbo to get going and i think 4 cyl dont cut it 4 a big truck.

but the biggest shock came from meeting a young apprentice at a nissan dealer here in melb i was exited to finally ask someone who not only work there but works mainly on navara/patrol.
I asked him are the 3.0 really that bad as ppl say...
To my horror his comments were something like this

-piece of shit......laughter....he tells me at his dealership they have about 7 vehicles at the moment waiting to have engine removed and replaced with new units. He tells me all he has been doing 4 last 1.5yrs or so is remove refit 3.0 engines.I asked him but what is actually happenig to those engines..he says cranks/rods but is not sure anymore cause they dont bother pulling them apart .they just replace it cause its getting so common.....he also tells me that they have approx 10-15 new engines in stock.

amazing/scary..........asked if any problems in navara 3.0t/d.his answer not really.

also he did mention quite a few broken gearboxs though i cant remember f that was auto or man he was talking about.

well what can i say that is 1 persons opion and yes he could be biast since he probally cant stand nissans anymore but it kinda comes from the horses mouth.....maybe 4.2 is the way

wow doesnt that make the 3L ever so popular coming from somone at nissan

i have no idea what the facination there is about the 3L maybe fuel economy and price.

At least the 4.2 holds it's value more.

Yes the ZD30 is powerful for its size, and with all its technology it uses bugger all fuel.

As an interesting aside while trying to decide what i want as next lease car i noticed the 100 series 4.2l 1hd-fte uses less fuel than the 1kz in the prado ! shows the difference even a little technology can make to consumption. Hope toyota bring out the 1kd-ftv out in the prado soon.

I would love a 4.2 patrol but just cant bring myself to buying it with its fuel consumption and relitivly speaking poor power, and extra cost.

I don't believe this statment.
First of all,so far,all engines had cracks/holes in pistons(not cranks/rods)
Secondly,
they dont bother pulling them apart
FALSE
Replacment engine is actually a block with new crank, rods and pistons.
Head and everything else is from the original engine.

he also tells me that they have approx 10-15 new engines in stock
BULL
Dealers don't stock expansive parts.
They have to be ordered after Nissan Australia aproves the repair.

Well I'm almost certainly gonna buy a 3L (so you can all say 'told you so' when it shits itself...........or maybe you can eat your hats ;))

4.2L are too hard to find second hand and I'm now thinking I may go for auto.......and engines are all going high tech electronic direct injection.....so eventually you'll have no choice.

After all the development maybe Nissan have it right now?

I'll duck now.......

Yes eventually you will have no choice. But now you do have a choice. Find a spanner man in middle of nowhere that can fix a modern computerized car.

Talk to people who have had their car go into LIMP HOME MODE (20kph I think) for 500klms....

Are there any aftermarket companies who will mate an auto up to the current TD6? This is all Nissan Aust. would have to do to make them sell like... like real good!

i guess its upto you... if you really want a 3L, we cant stop you buying one we just made you aware of the problems that they incur.

I have seen some 3L still going strong after 300k + on the clock

so good luck either way.

I actually mentioned this to Leon Daphne - CEO of Nissan Aust at the club presentation night.. Said good to see interest, but it aint gonna happen

I think they would sell 50% more TD6's with Auto easily. But then sales of the future "FLAGSHIT" would drop.

Personally I think its Nissans way of weaning people off quality and onto the 3.0
