if fuel does not worry you then get a V8..
i would say most 100 series turbo kits are pretty wussy.. if its relatively ne, you must also take into account the emissions which sucks a lot of power from the below boost area, they lag something feirce...

Fuel doesn't worry me as long as it's diesel.
And mechanically injected.

Serious about the Safari setup being no good??? Thats fair comment...
I've been out lately with a few guys with aftermarket turbo setups on their 80's - have to say there's one key thing you need to do - drive one running at least 12psi, intercooled and a 3" mandrel exhaust with no muffler.
When setup properly (Aneroids are $$$ and if tuned properly - you can work around this) the 1HZ loves the boost... They guys I have been out with have boost, economy and most of all - serious grunt!!! They just take off!! On road they fly along and off road they have the grunt to do things easier than me!!! I hate it but its only a matter of $$$
A conversion will set you back a minumum of $10k once you factor in all the hidden costs... I'd be going a simple setup for bang for buck value.

I thought with the 1HZ having indirect injection you should be careful with high boost and a subsequent high fuel load. Turbo tuners and installers have warned me not to do this as it may lead to servere engine damage.

For 10 grand I could have a V8 Chev diesel

With correct EGT and sensible tuning with intercooler - you can run 12psi all day (this isn't high with indirect injection) - just a day on a dyno and some sensible setup.

Enjoy the extra weight, weak blocks, major $$$ water pumps costs and minimal extra power.
Think about how close to standard you can get(cheaper in the long run) and what you expect power wise. Big power doesn't always mean big fun - make sure you stock up on gearbox's, driveshafts, diffs and cv's to boot....
Imgaine doing a torana conversion - taking the 6cyl 186 to V8 308.. what do you thinks gonna go bang? same rules apply - car's just larger.. allow $15K or you'll be kneeling in front of the bank manager.

If i were in your boat, i would be looking for a low km 1hdft multivalve motor to bolt straight in and sell that 1hz as a drive b4 u buy proposition...you wont get more power than a multivalve direct injected turbo, especially if you intercool it and boost it to 1 bar, unless you do what i have and put one on a 4.5....240kw/540nm :-)) at 5 psi

I have a DTS (MTQ) turbo kit on my 1HZ 80 series, as well as the boost compensater (pump aneroid) and a 3" mandrell exhaust from the turbo back. It runs 10.5-12psi, depending on load, gear, etc, and has NO trouble towing mates race car to Goulburn and back, without seeing the needle dip below 90km/h. I also gain about 70-90km MORE out of a tank of juice. This is all with 35" tyres, 5" lift, front/rear bars, draws, tools, etc. It weighs 2.8t, as i drive it everyday. Im soon to do a cooler on it, and retune it to suit. IF the 1HZ ever dies (touch wood it doesnt!!), i will go the 1HDFTE, electronics dont scare me

It would be easier to buy a new 79 series turbo diesel with the 1HDFTE than convert my old non-turbo model.
I actually bought one of these last year. I just don't like the power delivery off road. I would sooner drive my 1HZ with less power than the new one. Perhaps if I geared the new one down it would be better? I know it's great to drive on the highway. Sit on 160 no problems (I do live in the NT).
I would like to drive one of these"well tuned & powerful" 1HZ turbos and it might change my mind.

I'd like to aftermarket turbo intercool the 1HZ in my 79 series instead of trading up to the factory turbo model.

Just to throw something else into the pot.....had you thought of using a 1HD-T turbo? We swapped in a 1HZ into a mates 70 series (was originally a 13BT) and modified it with a 1HD-T cam, fuel pump and turbo, and has one of those small DTS top-mounted intercoolers. Produces 207HP at the wheels.
Even without increasing fuel delivery, it still got hot, so he swapped in the ally radiator from a late model 75 series and now the temp gauge doesn't get above 90 degrees. Downside is it smashes CV's, axles, hubs etc even more often that with the 13BT.
Cheers

Hi
I hear safari chips make a BIG difference to the low down on the fte....might be worth considering....i agree with you, all the t/d cruisers have nothing below 2k when std....and you wont beat a 1hz for idle torque.....so id be looking at a "kit" too.

Brumby runner,
You said you drove a 100 series GXL auto with Safari turbo etc. If this was the 1HZ engine they do not come in auto, so either it was a factory 100 series TD with a Safari Dtronic chip in it or he had put an auto box on the back of the 1HZ with Safari turbo. Do you know what it was? I ask as I have driven a number of 100 series' now with Safri and MTQ turbo's on them and they are much of a muchness between them, but they do increase power and torque by a huge amount compared to the NA 1HZzzzzz
I will be going with the APS Safari kit with intercooler, $6050 fitted here in Townsville.
Cheers

The 100 series GXL was available with the 1HZ auto. It is not very common. And as I said,
"This thing has a Safair turbo, Safari intercooler, fuel aneroid and 2.5" mandrel exhaust."
Good luck with the Safari kit. What are you putting it on?
Is Mike going to give you before and after power figures from his in-house dyno? Post them up when he does.

As was the 100 series rv available for a short time as a 1hz auto....almost a gxl, but missed out on some bells and whistles.

Maybe out of the subject, but is the 70 series you are talking about the one in 2004 Dennys? Grey/red with bonnetscoop.
Just wondered

Yep, thats the one. He finished 8th in Denny's 2004 and 2 weeks ago finished 4th at the Superwinch comp. Replaced the head on it last weekend, as it had cracked....due to it getting hot before we sourced the later model radiator.
It gets a coil conversion, 80 series rear diff and GU front diff after the comp this weekend
, hopefully no more busted axles and CV's. We're a little worried its gonna start beating our GQ Patrol
. Never gonna here the end of that if it does!!

10 grand for a turbo setup ??? WTF!
asif youd pay 10 grand for a turbo on a 1hz!
as someone else said you can get a complete 1HDFT for less than that, and at least youve then got direct injection!
