i do not know bj the king, but as the king bj i feel its my duty to say something here
regardless of what nam and carlton said (its true) the 80 series is arguably far stronger than the patrol CV for more reasons than one and all the details i wont go into right here, but as he stressed:
"they still break"
"maybe you have had a different experience"
so cmawwn. leave him alone, he has an opinion and is entitled to it!

Well i can tell you now that Hilux CVS are about 1 third as strong as a patrol or 80series and i used to be able to smash them with 33s and open diffs.
it dont mater what u drive cvs and axles etc will brake if u hit the gas hard we have oneabout to go in ur 80 as w ehave a lock right and had one wheel in a rut on a side slope and steerd away to make slop less and it didint like it now it clicks when we lift a wheel and get traction at full note lol
cush has just managed to grenade his 80 series front ring gear after 6 years of driving it like a maniac, the last 18 months or so on 39's.. still hasn't busted a CV in it. They are strong.

In standard form these things can not be beaten for strength or comfort on and offroad. Yes they are a little boxy or truck like inside and out but compared to an 80 or 100 series they are a much better buy. I beleive the nissan has a much stonger drive train than the toyota. The 80 and 100 do seam to have a little more creature comfort inside though.

They only seem to last a couple of months in underground mine service.
Worn out 1HZ and 7.50/16s and front diffs explode regularly and CVs are even more like a regular servive item.

Parts are readily avaliable in the country for all models and at a fair price for what model you buy. Nissans devalue quicker and at a higher rate. Parts for a given object are always slightly more expensive per ratio to give them a "prestige" feel. Late model nissans have issues with there manual gearboxs. toyota do not
Toyota's spare part service is overrated and quite often people are left waiting for weeks " for the boat to arrive", but Nissan is no better.
Toyota has just as many rediculous overinflated spares prices as any other manufacturer. $17 for a 100 series wheel nut is just one example.
Toyotas only gear box that is relatively free of "issues" is the 80 series box. All earlier boxes include many factory-planned failures that make Toyota lot of money with spare parts. The 100 and 78/9 series boxes have already shown themselves to be weaker than the 80 box by a considerable margin. Unfortunately with Nissan offering such abortions as the ZD30 3.0L td in the era since Renault took over the company, its hard to stick up for them either.

Mate, Dad owns a 100 series that has been set up for touring. ie, Koni adjustables, 33's, b/bar, winch, r/rack, compressor, drawer system, 2 fridge/freezers, kaymar rear bar with 2 spares. It does have a bit more room than our old 80 series but we are happy with the trade up. The only thing is the 80 serires felt a bit more manourverable with a lower center of gravity. As for petrol V diesel, the 6cyl petrol has solid front axel so does the standard diesel. The turbo diesel is only available with ifs. The diesels are totally different motors. Go for the 5spd though.
we have a lockright in 80 and cv no go boom yet one is click but that frome having wheel lifts at high revs and coimeing down and geting tration but they have been driven petal to the meadle every second weekend for the last 6 mounths befor it has started clicking 100 ser have inderpendent suspention now well some do not all
