Let's see how many other 4wd's you can list under $32,000 that have front/rear solid axles (toyota does not) - better yet, how many that have low range. I still believe the wrangler is excellent value for money, extremely capable even if a hilux may be slightly better. The wrangler stomps all over a hilux for enjoyment.
Lets see
any Range Rover pre mid 90's or Discovery other than new
Patrol, Mq, Gq, probably even some Gu
Lancruiser, 40,60,70,80 maybe even some 100's
Hilux, 4runner
Sierra
Mercedes Gwagen
Oka
Landrover, just about any other than brand new Defender
101FC
Unimog 400 series, some u1500
Volvo C303,304
for $32,000 there are a hell of a lot of better options than a TJ. IMO.
if you like it great, but get off your high horse cause youre digging a big hole for yourself if your going to tout the off road abilities of a stock TJ.
If you bought a Jeep to be different, think again. Tj's are today what Sierras were to the hairdresser set 10 years ago.

I'd say go the 13B turbo rotary. Not a 12A. 13B's have heaps more torque.
Greg - seriously you're putting in a cappacino engine in yours and telling people not to put a rotary with twice the capacity in????
Even a non turbo 13B will have heaps more grunt down low than either the 1.0 or 1.3 Sierra did. After all they do make something like 3 times the power. Even a bit higher up the rev range that's at least twice as much torque down low......
With the turbo, there's far more again, but esopecially low down (at least until you put a T04 and the psshhht valve on).
As a bonus, then you can run even sicker rockcrawling gears without needing to be in 3rd gear at 10 kph....
Just don't do the mazda rotary freak thing and put a big turbo on it and end up with major lag...... It's a sure way to break bits underneath - anywhere drive and or traction switches on and off. Both drag racing and offroading fit the bill.

Thanks, good to get a response from some guys that actually know something about rotors!!!!!!!!
there are heaps fo other advantages - ignition system is way up top and twin (l&t) so if 1 igniter packs it in u can run on 1 easily ( if you use a points dizzy you can run it without a rotor cap or button if an emergency)
2 coils ( 1 spare??)
alternator is up top, use rx4 bosch type if you are a mud junky... easy to change brushes..
13b carbys are really good off camber ( one of the best ) easy to rebuild
and clean out.
add a small oil tank into the return line from the cooler and mount lower than th sump and it will run on its side for quite a while...
plus they fly down the highway so gearing it low is way cool!

where exactly did i say not to use a rotary? what i have written is that i am using something that revs just as much if not more than a rotary (i believe).

i was just tring to point out both sides good and bad
and for the record i would love to see this done it would be good to see if the diff's and such will hold up to the thrassing
i know that i dont want to be the only 13b owner for a couple of hundred k's when the thing breaks at the cape! if you don't want to ever go out bush on some of the great trips around owe country than that is fine, just seeing things from a different point of view.
and when rotarys are put in there true bracket against the 8's (not a 6) than there torque looks quite poor

Wondering if you can swap back your Cappacino engine for a Series 6 RX7 engine yet?

just had a quick look at that page.
Dont use the rx7 sump as the have in that conversion, get yourself an rx2 sump as it is reversed (the sump is towards the back of the engine not the front). Dont bother with the standard exhaust manifold they are total junk, you can easily make a set of extractors out of 2 90* mandrel bends.
If anyone is actually interested in doing that conversion i have a 4 core radiator that is out of an R100 that will fit well in a sierra, i also have an rx4 oil cooler and a set of extractors off a 12a to fit into a R100, the extractors hug the block as it is a bit of a tight squeeze into a R100 and would fit in a sierra quite easily.

Guys, one thing i have leart about Rotry's is that 1mad knows his stuff!
When he was doing that buildup he was using what he already had, he told me right from the word go that to do it properly he should just us a stock 13b, not a full noise NOS injected drag car engine
but it was FARKING MAD!!!!
I remember him driving it around micks backyard, it would just idle over everything, it was pretty cool, however due to the amount of tourque qnd Horsepower this thing was producing it was just to harsh on running gear!
I am sure if anyone did it again with a STOCK engine, hilux running gear and some form of reduction gearing it would work really well!!
I say GO FOR IT!

Specs-
6port 12A stocker with Carb
Hilux 5spd and Transfer with 4.7 gear set.
Hilux diffs SOA with 4.88 gears and lockers. CIG rear, Lockright front.
Prob 33 or 35 inch tyres.
Exo cage
And stretch the wheel base as far as we can with a short wheel base body.
With this setup it should be fast in high range and suitable for Gymkanah work yet in Low range it should kick ass in the slow crawling stuff with plenty of revs when needed.

Ruff, that is going to be one awesome allrounder.
his only prob will be the speeding tickets, and bent front springs from doing wheelstands shpwing off at the lights
40 series radiators also fit nicely
to fit just get a rx3/rx4 engine mount crossmember and trim 15mm off each side then weld it in, it looks factory then :wink:
