I too find this very hard to beleive, exspecially if your using standard links at the rear.
Pics would be nice, aswell as a simple photo of your upper shock mounts and shocks
Well heres a pic.

The shocks are 15" travel so obviously it is not 15 up and 15 down.
And it does reach the end of the shock travel.

just for experimentation i have dodgyied up a set of spring spacers 2inch and have been driving around 4 3 days now and no main dilemas yet i have been checking everything 2 times a day and still no faults off road is great onroad is a bit diferent but that is probly the lack of swaybars will keep you posted

at 5 inches of lift i had to completely hack the sh*t out of my crossmeber where the front drive shaft was foulin (more so when articulating)
You may not be havin these dramas yet cause your shock may be to short and restricting the downwards travel but when/if you change the shocks you will have to do sumthing with the cross member
You gotta post up sum pics cooter

I know of somebody with a comp Discovery running about a 8 to 10 inch lift. pm me if you are interested. I don't know this guy but apparently he is very successful. I have number of a guy who knows his number.
The Rangie's have an A Frame in the rear, we may aswell stretch some boundaries to keep those wheels on the ground. I would suggest a 4 inch lift would be high enough for great flex with the right coils. (offset rims, cut guards) I don't have a body lift so I look no higher than 2 inch spring lift with 2 inch body lift.
The measurement from the centre of eye at the top shock mount to the bottom shock mount before my spring dislocates is 675mm; instead of about 575mm for a normal 2 inch lift. With the weight of my 120Litre fuel tank I am sitting a bit under 4 inches. I havn't been running this setup for long so I am no expert.
Good Luck with your quest.

I WANT THAT !
Tim...
That travel is superb
How is your front end set up? I am about to order a 4" lift for my '03 Fender, but after seeing that pic, I NEED to know what you have done with yours.
Well done, mate. Looks Awesome

Thanks!!
Its on a 2" lift, dual rate front springs, single rate rear. Pretty stiff but can't remember the poundage.
Shocks are custom built Orams, same all round, eye to eye, 15" travel, remote reservoir, damping and rebound adjustable. Rear end on sliders from Scorpion / Equipe Extreme kit, cranked trailing arms.
At the front, springs running on rear dislocation cones. Shocks mounted in front of the springs to eliminate binding / bending. Custom made front shock turrets. Custom made hinged radius arm on the passenger side.
I run 600mm brake hoses.
All the custom work was done by our own comapny BMNT Offroad. Wait till you see the vehicle to replace this one!!!

~3" spring, 2"body, 80 series bumpstops inside coils, retained coils f&r, 14" travel shocks. Ran 35" tyres. On 32's in pic. IMO too unstable on side slopes and poor high speed handling.

nah the front shaft does touch the cross member as i found out today and i am starting to see what you mean about top heavy i have settled on 3 inch coils and 1.5 inch body lift will be putting some pics on as soon as my camera has been repaired (took a ride on my rear bumper) but at least i tried it for myself but with 4 inch lift the handleing was vastly improved. but on a diferent note is it true that defenders of the same age have lower ratio low range as i am still not happy with yhe disco box compared to my old s111
ps does anyone live near maitland?

Yes some spoke about lack of stability with excessive lifts, but they also gave good advice about retaining the top of the springs, which helps with stability and makes the front articulation better balanced with the rear.
All stock LT230 have the same ratio low range. Defenders have lower ratio (1.41:1) high range.
I have a defender LT230 with maxidrive 30% lower, low range gears in my rangie and like it.
I live about 50 min from Maitland, and there are others on this board who are closer.

i am in desperate need 4 some good tyres but as my encarseration ooops i mean wedding is comin closer i will be scrimping and saving after that i migt look at some lower gears
but the reason i was asking about maitland is that i live here and play in the quarries at abermain and today there was a hell of a lot of muddy rangies there a good 15 of them in all shapes and sizes
