Babcock plans $45m biodiesel plant for Darwin

Sydney - Friday - July 8: (RWE Australian Business News) -
Babcock & Brown Environmental Investments Ltd (ASX: BEI) reports key
contracts had been signed for the construction of a $45 million
biodiesel manufacturing facility in Darwin.
Construction is due to commence in late July with completion
targeted for August 2006 and production expected in September 2006.
Mr Gary Levin, Managing Director of Babcock & Brown
Environmental Investments, said contracts had been finalised with Lurgi
Pacific for the design and construction of the plant, and that Vopak
Asia Pacific would be investing $27 million in fuel storage and
infrastructure facilities.
"Both Lurgi and Vopak are highly regarded global leaders in
their fields and the ongoing relationships strengthen our capabilities
and capacity in the Australian market," Mr Levin said.

That lot combined can do around 600 lits of vegi oil a week !

I heated it up in a 20ltr drum I got some bricks & made a fire ring stuck some wood in there & lit it then stuck the drum on top.

Yes i believe biodiesel eats away natural rubber, just need to get synthetic seals. Dont know what the case is with vege oil though.

I wonder what the main source of the oil they are going to use.
Perhaps being in Darwin they are shipping in plant material from futher north, since I dont think there would be an Australian source near Darwin.

That would be a shame, because I would have thought Australia would the the best place in the world to grow large amounts of stuff to make oil from, with our large amount of poor quality soils and drouight areas which the right types of plants could be used in. Could really revive the farming industry.

I bet the bastards in the gov or oil industry would make sure bio-fuel is a similar price to what we are paying now.

When i was looking into this a couple of years ago the gov was implementing legislation for excise back then. Im seriously considering just running vege oil though, just needs to be set up properly where as producing biodiesel is a little more involved, i wont be paying shiat then.

During the last election I asked both major parties what their stance was on the Biodiesel issue. Both indicated that there would be a parity excise applied to Biodiesel. Also if you are going to make it for your own use you need to register with the ATO. This means you will have to pay $0.38143 per litre of Bio.

I had a look at filters today there different flow rates & anything from 100micron to 1 micron filters.

What i need to know is how fine a filter i need to use.

Seriously, any news on homemade Bio PULP

The reason the bio diesel requires viton type seals is because of the isopropyl alcohol (IPA)content.
IPA does effect natural and butyl type rubbers.
Most post 1998 diesel vechicles will have the viton type seals in their pumps as Ultra Low Sulphur diesel fuel also has a detrimental effect on butyl seals due to lower lubricity.
Anyone remember the BP diesel debarcle back in 2000??
Do a google search on biodiesel, there is a wealth of info out there, also a few books in your local libary worth a read.
Filtration is crucial, the finer the better, but something around 5 micron should be adequate

I have heard its in darwin because there is access to palm oil in NT and Indonesia. They have already sold all of the Bio-diesel by-product (glycrin).

I don't think this will have enough production to cover the Minining Industry let alone the General Public.

We won't see this in retail outlets unless someting drastic happens.

1. Tax all Fosil fuel at 100cpl + GST
2. Tax Bio-Diesel and Ethonol at GST only.
3. Take Luxury car tax off
4. 4x4 Tax is lower than cars, change this so that is based on Fuel.
If Petrol only Powered tax at 15% (new Car purchase)
If Diesel only Powerd tax at 5% (new Car purchase)
If Bio-Fuel Certified tax at 2% (new Car purchase)
5. Mandate All diesel vehicles should be Bio fuel certified by 2009.
6. Educate everone on the benifets on Bio fuels and help Small retail fuel outlets move to Bio-fuel.
7. Supply blends of 5, 10 bio-fuel in the interum until supply reaches the masses. this will help to lower cost of fuel until enough supply is available to do B100.
8. Help modify existing diesel owners cars to Bio-fuel.(Only need to change Fuel filter and on pre 1992 Diesels change the seals.)

What we need is cars like the diesel VW lupo and Audio A2. (3 litres per 100K)

This would change this up for the good of the Economy, Ozone, Farmers.
and the dertement of the Oil cartels in the Middle East.

Now there could be a bit of tweaking of the figures but I would personally love this.

Diesel available as the inventer intended. (Vegi Oil.)

I am currently researching the dual fuel conversion (diesel to warm up/vegie oil to run) for my old diesel 60. For an outlay of less than $2000 and doing it myself with help from tech minded club mates, I should have my vehicle set up to run on waste cooking oil.

I hope to get this done in the next 6-12 months. I'm fed up with the oil companies gouging diesel owners simply because they can....so I'll cut off my reliance on their product.

but using vege oil isnt bio you arent ading anything just filtering yes so the gov is only making 38cents for every liter so why do i need to pay tax on it when iam not selling it

This is what i'm thinking of using

Just the filter they come in different sizes the flow rate i want is 30ltrs per min its their smallest
