I got the wrangler kit from rocky road outfitters

http://www.rocky-road.com/zuksus.html

I picked the springs up locally for $50 ea

I havent put the kit in however because I want to have the diffs ready to set up before I make it unable to be rolled.

Damo,

SPOA Conversions are still specifically ruled out by QLD transport as at my most recent information (as well as just about everyone elses on this board). If you've got any other information please share it with all the QLD people, because this is still what we get when we speak to an engineer or to QLD transport.

The Hilux loophole was because the change is theoretically an "axle conversion" (Code LD) instead of a conversion of the spring mounting location which as mentioned abouve has been specifically singled out by QLD transport as a non allowed modification that cannot be certified or approved under any circumstances.

If this has been closed I dunno, but the loophole is to my knowledge no longer available on a sierra anyway due to the fact that a Hilux axle is too wide to be within the approved axle guidelines of a WT or NT sierra anyway. Still, I hear of it still happening (even a few months ago) that such a conversion has been approved by an engineer, then inspected by QLD transport and passed.

Coily's, Jimny's and Vitaras are within the allowed widths for hilux axles. WT and Narrow track sierras are not.

The Hilux tyre size legality I've had different answers from a few different engineers, same as people like antt have faced - part of the reason I ditched the Vitara rather than doing an SAS. Some say it will allow the Hilux tyres to be legally used (the drivetrain is effectively all hilux now) thus allowing the Hilux theoretical maximum of 7.50R16 +15mm (or +.6").

Wrangler TG is 32.4", theoretically once again allowing say 33" tyres. Many 7.50R16's are only 31.8" allowing only 32.4".

If the tyre placard from the donor vehicle is not allowed to be used (some engineers say it's not allowed but some say it is) then the maximum tyre size is still gonna be 26.9" so enjoy your 215/70/15 or 205/75/15 tyre choice.

Once again, there is no conflict within my statement if you read it and thought.

MQ front spring pads do line up with WT sierra spings
and a MQ booster does bolt in, I have done it
this is not shit..............

Mq rear spring pads do not line up, but can be moved

No shit

Y worry engineering a car on 31 ish size tyres, when your going to run bigger tyres off road anyway
If you stay stock the engineers shouldnt have a problem, and you can just put them back on if you get done by the cop's, to get the defect lifted.

ans i have an mq booster in the shed next to a suzuki booster
and the studs are a fair bit off lining up

What about yj jeep diffs?

Surerly they wouldn't be as wide as the hilux, and would be stronger than sierra because they came with a 4.1L behind them.....

Any thoughts

Mick - why is it that you think hilux is out? you agreed that I need bigger diffs but what to do?

Has anyone got hilux diffs legal in queensland? Not that I'm worried, the motor wont be, so why stop there.

Are there any other makes of vehecles worth looking at?
Pajero, feroza etc.....
Choc_E hilux diffs are the ideal replacement don't get me wrong. For the size and price they're great. But you can't really put them in spoa.... even if they came that way

You could make em spua though or maybe go the patrols. Keep us posted ;)

Rocky diffs would be possible if you got the very rare Rigid axle (think 85/86). but they'd be expensive and weak so you wouldnt go for them anyway. Later rockys and ferozas are IFS, once again no good to you.

how much wider are mq's to lux diffs?

And are bundera diffs narrower than lux diffs?

Including average price for all these diffs, and not having to re-locate front spring hangers for mq's, what would be the cheapest, easiest option?

Ok you guys/gals have got me thinking now
1) What is the differance in width of the wt diffs and the coily diffs?
2) Is it feasable to put vitara rear diff in my nt trayback and get a wt diff with the vitara front diff center in it to maintain the same ratios?
3) Are you sure that daihatsu rocky's had ifs as i have never seen a rocky with ifs? I have just been given an 86 model soft top rocky so i know its a solid front on it. I know feroza's were ifs but it just got me thinking thats all

i am pretty sure vitara rear diffs are 100mm wider then toy diffs
so around 59" wms-wms

so if you want a vitara diff in the rear id chop the drivers side down about 7-8 inches as then it will be offset and the right width but then u get into custom axels wich is $$$

since u have the ute just put in toy diffs you have the wheel base so u wont get any vibrations

u will only gain 2" a side over a widetrack

if you keep it low i dont think u would have any worries where u live

i dont think "any1" would pick up there toy diffs unless they new a bit about 4wds

1) From memoru the coily diffs are about 80mm wider. no personal experience in this.

2) Yes and no. You need to use the Front Vitara R&P on the sierra centre for the best result (vitara front centre is weaker)

3) yes later rockys had IFS. Dunno exactly when the IFS came in but I know 1985-86 are Soild axle, and the later new shape are not. One to ask on teh Daihatsu bit or even search redbook.

The overall width is within about 20mm at the back, but the vitara is definately wider in the diff. The toyota axles have bigger offset rims.

I posted details up here ages ago about it.

anything is possible

but if u dont want to ouboard your front spring hangers u may have to notch the housin a little so ur perch isnt huge

outboarding ur front hangers (to match the perch spacing on the toyota diff) will make it alot easier to do tho

Hey choc_e , not a leafy or in queensland but I have hilux diffs , had no problem with any of the components , came for the right price of $1200 from a mate with 4.88's and detroit lockers. The rear has only one problem and in hindsight a bundeera rear housing would have worked better due to the offset pumpkin , I had to angle my transfer to avoid the dreaded tailshaft vibration so now my transfer flanges line up with the front and rear diff flanges in a straight line , this got rid of all vibrations so a bundeera housing would work well. I also have rear disc brake setup , using a holden rodeo rotor and a zf fairlane calliper , there are various variations in disc brake components that will fit with minor modification but all will need brackets for the mounting of the calliper. This is a good mod not only for mud and sand but improves your braking dramatically and is engineer friendly if you know what I mean. The wheel track on mine is standard hilux and that is what they work on in NSW. I had 15 x 8 steel rims and 35 inch tyres , my engineer had no problems with this , you would need to fabricate guards to cover your wheel , I incorporated them into bash bars as well and all my bar work is fully removable so if I damage it or need to work on the vehicle , I can remove them for access. Grimbo is right when he sais you will have clearance problems with 33's on hilux diffs cause I have trouble with 35's , If you are serious about the truck you could always have the diff tube's shortened and the axles resplined , people go fuck , that's expensive but it's not when you don't attract attention with wide wheels sticking out the guards , you can keep the original width or a little wider but have the safety of the larger components , also with the larger engine I'd stay away from detroits and go for a air locker , as the other type , especially detroits make the car very twitchy on acceleration , there are a couple of pics to see how wide they are , Cheers Paul.
