same problem again, click, click......nothing. damn thing, ill have to try and get it out again and see. someone suggested brushes, so ill have to look at that. i got out of the electric moter industry cause i hate this shit........
td42 starters arnt expensive to have an auto lekky check it out...

my starter for the 2.8 (rd28t) in the GQ was 300 to fully rebuild after shittin the spring load clutch inside it..

td42s are different if i remember.. and would be cheaper.

TOM
300 is expensive man.........i dont wana spend that much if i can help it........ maybe ill reenter the electric moter industry for a day or so and fix the bitch myself

not if you want a proper autospark to fix it.

When this same thing happened on my TD42 starter, i found that 2 of the brushes were badly worn to the point where the small springs that keep them in contact with the comutator were pressing against the brush holder rather than the brush itself. Replacing these 2 brushes only out of the 4 got it going again. I've also had problems with bad connections with the solenoid coil supply wire where it goes from the screw connection into the solenoid housing. Make sure the plunger isnt sticking.

ok, this bitch still doesnt want to start.........i pulled the starter out again and it bench tests perfectly. put it back in and it wont go, ive cleaned all the contacts on the moter, battery and solenoid and it wont go. ive got 10 volts on the starter moter though, is this enough of a drop to make it not go?????????

10 volts isnt enough.. you need at least i think 12.8 volts i think :?:

but even on a very low voltage.. it should crank a bit... but i guess 10 volts may be too low to crank over a diesel engine (high compression)

oh and when you bench tested it.. did you use your trucks battery ? or the 'other battery' sittin there?

the other batteries that are sitting there are flat as........so i had to use my trucks battery.......

one thing i just thought of. it runs great off the trucks battery while its sitting on the floor, but once i put it in the truck.......its no go

Do you have a earth on the car. What voltage to you get at the battery? If it's more than 10 volts then you have a stuffed starter cable. They can corrode inside and this can cause voltage drop.

yeh, ive been racking my brain for a bit........the battery voltage is 12.8

terminal on the starter reads 10.4

the solenoid clicks but nothing turns.......but when i hooked it up with jumper leads it worked fine........this was while it was on the bench, not in the car. i might try that and if it works ive gotta cut up some 25mm cable tomorow and ill just make a little loom up for the starter.........

thanks for that, it sounds like it could be it

Did you load test the starter on the bench ie- do this by putting a bit of wood on the end of the gear and put some weight on it then kick it in if it doesn't spin the gear the helical drive is buggered. If it does you got wiring problems.

im not sure if i understand what that means........it sounds preety dangerous as in, it will trow the bit of timber if it does work.........im still to test the wiring properly......but the game is on tonight......so ill do it later

Sounds like a wiring problem. Try by passing the wiring with a jumper lead directly to the starter and provide an earth from the engine to the battery negative with a jumper lead too.

CAREFUL YOU DON'T SHORT ANYTHING!!!

Sounds like the starter is poling and drawing a shitload of current under load. Doing this they will click in and spin under a no laod situation but drop their bundle when you load em up.

10. something volts is also a concern! Perhaps whip it around to an auto lec and ask him to bench it ?

its solved, i put a jumper lead directly onto the starter from the battery and it spun.........but ive drained my battery so ill have to roll it later and charge her back up again............
