EGT is Exhaust Gas Temperature. Basically it is just a thermometer (thermocouple) that sits in front of the turbo (in the exhaust manifold). The idea is that is you have too much fuel under load the EGT will get too hot. You set up the boost and fuelling using the EGT to make sure you don't go overboard - and then monitor it when the engine is working hard.
The thermoguard kit is pretty popular.

Any Jaycar make a kit for $70.
I think Chuck runs about 10psi on his and it is a daily driver. I will probably run about 10psi too in the 110 (with intercooler).
If yours is a late model then you should have the alfin pistons, the same as the turbo models. If you can connect the oil spray that is even better. But I doubt the engine will be working very hard pulling a 90 along.
The factory 4BD1T's came with either an IHI or a Garett turbo. One of them had no wastegate, and relied on fuelling/revs to limit boost. I am pretty sure my NPR manual says they both ran about 5psi of boost but it is in OZ so I can't really check right now.

What about a non rover guise. I mean the 3.9 is a bit of a slug; a slug that drinks more than a severe alcoholic accidently locked in a brewery overnight.
What about a Td5/Tdi and mod/chip it?

I don't know how you come to any of those conclusions. I get between 9-11L/100km from my 4BD1. Usually closer to the 9L. And my engine has slightly increased fuelling but no turbo and it pulls as hard as the Tdi's I have driven (and better than a lot of toyota and nissan NA diesels I have driven). A stock 4BD1T has 120Bhp, A stock 300Tdi has 111Bhp - no prizes for guessing which has more torque. Both are easily tweakable for more.
IMO the TDi/TD5 are both good engines (The Tdi is extremely economical, and a chipped TD5 sounds great), but neither will last as long as a 4BD1T (or 4BD1 with aftermarket turbo) when both engines are putting out comparable output.

Sorry !:D
I was refering to the 3.9V8i.
I have always loved the 3.9D isuzu. My choice for my around australia car! If the army use it and all! A bit noisy/slug/truck like though!
but if you want power, etc, I was sort of hinting at other mods around, holden/ford V8s, Chev, etc.

Another thing Justin told me, is he is having the original manifold re-cast to be a bolt up for the garret 4 bolt pattern. Cost is under $500 each.

I have a lot of other work on my plate, but when I can get around to it I intend to change the stock Garrett turbo on my 4BD1-T and fit an air to water intercooler.
In my opinion, the 4BD1-T could run over 20 psi boost (I will find out). It has to be intercooled and EGT has to watched. I would not try that much boost without oil spray to the pistons.

The brand new one we have from izuzu is allready a 4 bolt pattern which im sure is the Standard Garret pattern. It was only around $300 from Izuzu. We made a 20mm adapter to bolt on the WRX Turbo.

Anyone know how a 4bd1 compares in weight to a 200/300tdi/ td5 ?

4BD1 is 322 kg
300TDi are similar weight to the v8 if that helps.

Not a Chance unless they are about half the weight of a 200TDI. 2 guys can comfortably pick up a 3.9 Disco motor. I doubt 4 guys could pick up a 200TDI. We have the one at work that came out of the New Lockless and we can not move it without the Forklift.

I swapped a 300TDi into my rangie and the front is not sitting any lower than before, which lead me to conclude that the engines were similar weight.

Interestingly, Haynes disco manual states disco weights are:
3 door carb engine - 1979 kg
3 door efi petrol - 2089 kg
3 door 200 TDi - 2008 kg
3 door 300 TDi - 2040 kg
5 door efi petrol - 2128 kg
5 door 200 TDi - 2053 kg
5 door 300 TDi - 2065 kg

Dosn't mean anything in relation to the engine. That model car could have had a number of different options resulting in a heavier car.
The 200/300Tdi is definatly lighter than the Isuzu. LR brought out special front springs to handle the Isuzu weight.
