What is the best all round tyre in 33's
Moderators: toaddog, TWISTY, V8Patrol, Moderators
I think the MudStars come out of the Cooper factory.
Most of the local guys here run BF MT's, a few use MotorWay Muddies (retreads), and one or two use the claws. Myself, I've got Maxxis Mudzillas, but personally, there quite soft, work really well in the mud etc. - but just dont last.
I'm heading to the Cape next year, and i'll probly run a 33" mud tyre, something quiet, but has some bitey teeth.
Claws are good though. Wishing i hadn't sold my 35's now....

Ace tyres in Smithfield (Victoria rd)sell MT,Cooper,Good Year etc.
Personally I wouldn't buy radial claw for every day use and only moderate 4wdriving.
Also, service at Ace tyres is bit on low side.
Couple of months ago I bought 4 tyres and booked time and day for fitting.
Got there on time and ask how long it would take and answer was: "an hour"
Three hour later I had to get up and ask what's happening as no one found it apropriate to let me know why I am waiting.
At the end I waited over 4 hours and wheel alignment wasn't done properly anyway.

Re: x terains
$ 328 for 33" and they are better than MTR's and BFG MT's its a big call but i know had them all and Pro Comp X-Terrians are the stuff45punkbus wrote:how much are they for the procomp x-terians?known 2 wrote:procomp x-terians have a similar tread patern to claws and a cheaper (especialy in 35i) what do u guys rate them against claw they don't seem as chunky
but as it stands they are my options 35i xterains or 33i claws.
Re: x terains
If your talking about the radil claw, then looking at the price that xplot said, the claws are cheaper, i could get 33's for around $280, and i got my 35's for $295 balanced and fittedxplot wrote:$ 328 for 33" and they are better than MTR's and BFG MT's its a big call but i know had them all and Pro Comp X-Terrians are the stuff45punkbus wrote:how much are they for the procomp x-terians?known 2 wrote:procomp x-terians have a similar tread patern to claws and a cheaper (especialy in 35i) what do u guys rate them against claw they don't seem as chunky

yet a radial claw is not for on-road use not like pro comp x-terriansGQTrav wrote:If your talking about the radil claw, then looking at the price that xplot said, the claws are cheaper, i could get 33's for around $280, and i got my 35's for $295 balanced and fittedxplot wrote:$ 328 for 33" and they are better than MTR's and BFG MT's its a big call but i know had them all and Pro Comp X-Terrians are the stuff45punkbus wrote:how much are they for the procomp x-terians?known 2 wrote:procomp x-terians have a similar tread patern to claws and a cheaper (especialy in 35i) what do u guys rate them against claw they don't seem as chunky

My radial claws gripped better then my MTR's on and off the road and they look better too. There is a slight vibration when you come to a stop.

Yeah I noticed that too, the tread blocks do vibrate the truck at anything under about 5km/h.
None the less, Radial Claws are excellent on the black top (and rule off it ofcourse.) They seem to be wearing ok too.
Though as an all round tyre, if you don't need to tackle anything within a Claws appetite, you may be better with a more road orientated tyre to begin with. Mainly as they are getting very loud with age, which is cool for the tuff bling appeal, but can get annoying when carting friends around etc trying to talk.....

i think he meant that the radials are designed as a tyre which are able to be used on road, unlike the bias, which from what i understand are illegal on road, and are as loud as all buggery. although, from the opinions of the majority, while there is the 10%/90% split on/off road, they perform better on the bitumen then some BFG's AT's! go figurexplot wrote:Do some more research buddy only 10% road and 90% off road45punkbus wrote:radial claws are designed for on road use... its the bias ply claws that are not designed for on road use...

Just go with the radial claws. They grip like all buggery, handle on road as good as most of the AT's (as said above) cost the same, and look SH!T HOT!
Plus everyone can here you comin and whip around thinkin "ooh here comes a beefy rig!"
All the gear, No idea...
Do you know this for a fact because I emailed VicRoads about this and the reply I got from them was that "You can fit a Bias ply tyre as long as the load and speed rating is the same as or greater than the Radial tyre as nominated"bogged wrote:if your car came with radials, its illegal to run bias ply.bad_religion_au wrote:nah closer to 290, and their a streetable muddie... your thinking of the bias ply claws i think... don't take no for an answer either, alot of 4x4 shops and tire joints made this fawk up when my bro was after them, telling him he was stupid for wanting a "bias ply" for street use... they;d be like "yeah radial claws, their a bias ply tire ".oh and these shops are pretty big movers in the 4x4 world. luckily he found somewhere than knew the differencebeefa125 wrote:Those Mickey Thompson radial claws look the shit but arent they like 400 a pop and really a full time off road tyre ?
Looks like MTRS might be the go next time
This may also be of interest to those in Vic that wish to run tyres with a different speed rating. I queried them with regards to running a "winter tread pattern"(Mud and snow type tyres) and this was also what I got back.
"
In regards to your question on tyre speed ratings in part you are correct.
Despite what is stated in relation to tyre specifications on the Tyre Placard there is provision under Schedule 8 of the Road Safety [Vehicles] Regulations to fit a tyre other than specified.
The minimum speed rating of the tyres for your vehicle is 140 KPHr
I refer in particular to regulation 52 of these regulations which is headed.
Tyres - Manufacture's rating.
Reg 52 [3]
A tyre fitted to a motor vehicle must when first manufactured, have been rated by the tyre manufacturer as suitable for use at the lesser of.
[52] [3] [a] [1]
A car with special features for off road use = 140 kilometres an hour,
The regulation gives further examples of various speed rating requirements for other vehicles and gives an example using [a] [1] as quoted above as being a four wheel drive vehicle
Part [4 ] States that this clause applies to a vehicle instead of the tyre speed category requirements in the relevant ADR. "
