Ok, have got myself a IPAQ. Is the Navman 3450 good for bread crums/waypoints on 1:25000 scale or is it more or less for town driving?

Is there a better alternative for IPAQs?

Well I have never used the Ipaq with a Navman sleeve but I just Googled the sleeve and it would seem that it is designed pretty much for use with the software it comes with. This appears to be for turn by turn navigation around towns.

If what you want to do is use this setup for 4wding then I would suggest using a programme called Oziexplorer. It is very popular for this purpose. You can basically scan or get a hold of a digital map in any scale of any location you like.

The setup I use is with a Toshiba PPC using a Compact Flash GPS and a 1 gig SD card. I find it works extremely well. If you only have the one card slot you may need to use either a Bluetooth GPS or a serial GPS so as to keep your card slot for storage. If you want turn by turn nav too then there are programmes available such as Destinator for that.
