Assuming that you could build a comp legal buggy with hydraulic drive . I think a better system would be to use electric motors. They could be sealed against mud and water and give you the speed and torque needed. Could be powered by a generator with a big V8 to give you the noise factor.
just an idea.

How about using a hydrostatic drive setup off a tractor to replace tcase and gbox. Keep the revs up and adjust forward motion accordingly?

I've seen a couple of pics of that thing while in a comp too...
it's one of the stupidest things i have seen seen and it would have took a lot of time and money to make it too
