I am now thinking about using auto from the front cut I am getting
Probably do what mud4b has suggested and remove vit xfer and run auto into sierra xfer
Was thinking about using vit xfer with gearing but swaying away because of lack of gearing in hi range which could be a problem when I get rid of the 31's

in favour for some bigger meats

Bazooked, how much tranny tunnel cutting is needed? I have a 2" b/l.
I have heard of people just spreading the tunnel with a porta power or jacks?
LM.

As Moose posted I found an old 4WD Monthly Mag with this little LJ80 (GROVER) has a small pic showing the auto to transfer

glad this popped up again..
im doing the vit 3speed (holden trimatic) conversion right as we speak.
i have pulled the vit t-case off .
i have purchased a 2wd rear extension housing (measures at 456mm long) and chopped it back to 100mm long. this clears the governor on the output shaft.
it has been machined back to true with a milling machine. from here i weld a 10mm ally flat to it, machine a centre hole.
i also cut the dust seal/ rear shaft support fron a sierra 5 speed and machined it true with the mill.
this gets welded onto the modded extension housing then fully braced.
the whole box from the bell housing to the rear output ends up 100mm longer than a sierra 5 speed.the rear shaft of the vit auto is now supported by the sierra dust/ rear shaft support.
will try to get pics but digi cam is stuffing up.

Yeah I noticed if I wanted to run the auto and not the vit xfer that the shaft out of the auto would have been unsupported and had plenty of play
I have noticed tech on this forum saying just stick a shaft to the back of the auto.... I wouldn't expect the auto to last long with that much play in the rear shaft

just a update on the progress.
the adaptor plate is made.
the box bolted up perfect.
the gearbox mount sits over but just infront of the mount on the x member.
it looks like it will fit in the tunnel with my 2" body lift, will know tomorrow.

this wont be a daily driver so would it survive without the bearing?
anyone?

antt it definently needs a support of some kind.
without it you get around 10mm of side movement in the shaft.

did u use a bearing, or just a seal in a cover plate to support it?

i chopped a sierra 5 speed rear extension housing up.
it has a brass/copper bush that the slip yoke rests on.
much like the rear output of your vit case, but yours has a needle roller bearing.

easier to just get a 5 speed sierra gbox and mate it up to the g16b? are they a bolt up fit?

yup true..
they are not a bolt up no.
you can buy a adaptor plate kit or just weld alloy ears to the bottom of the box where the studs go through.
you can just drill the top holes in the sierra box to the vit size as they line up with the vitara holes in the block.

ok i found out today the auto clears the tunnel with a 2" body lift almost.
i need to cut around a inch into the tunnel and floor.
not too bad i think.i could get away with less but i like to have some tolerance for the movement of the engine/box.
the auto dipstick needed to be bent out 1" also. it did clear the firewall but just not enough.
