Is the TD42T available as a crate motor? Or is it something you have to get from a wrecker?

Anybody give a definate date or engine number on the lighter and heavier piston issue. I know it`s been covered somewhere before.
August 1993 is the date they changed to lighter internals on the non-turboed engines.

atleast now i can answer my own questions, and also when the wifey ask them to.
i think to be honest im going to go with the 3.0L turbo deisel.
the reason being is i wont ever be towing anything, and as far as 4x4ing goes the sand and some light bush is all i will be doing as im paying enough for this thing and dont wont to damage anything.
i come from a drag racing back ground where bigger is always better,so in this case yes the bigger 6 should be the way to go.
but as some people have said, the 3.0l has had the bugs ironed out and makes good power,my mate owns a 4x4 shop in noosa and i think sells d-tronics for them, couple of after market bolt ons and i think ill be happy.

iv now changed my mind on the truck that i want and found a truck last night that is a 2002 and is choc a bloc full of options and things and is bloody cheap with just under 100k klm.so im going for a test drive thismorning and may bring her home.

cheers scotty
for that matter i would not touch a 3.0 litre with a 40 foot pole they suck big time and are prone to holing pistons

u guys are helping out tonnes in my own choice of vehicle.
i was after a 4.2 V6 for 10mins/day and occasional towing the comp car.
now im leaning towards a 99/2000 2.8TD for same purpose..
Have i got it arse up?

After owning both 3.0 & 4.2, I'd go the 4.2.

If your going the 3.0 get the later model to prevent engine failure and possible problems like many others. Series 3 or later even though I've heard series 3 have blown up. At least you may get a warranty claim.

Stick it on a dyno for turbo & fuel adjustment, wack on a 3" exhaust and it's the best mod you'll ever do.

The 4.2 is proven strong engine that'll do over 500,000. It comes out in the patrol ute where the 3.0 isn't available. To me that means its has to be a better engine.

Plus its easier to service, repair and lower costs on parts.

Drive both if you can especially try driving the 4.2 with the exhaust and turbo mod.

TD42, TD42T & ZD30 all have the same manual gearbox, but with different ratios. Manual ZD30s, 4.5s & 4.8s have the 260 rear diff, all others have the 233, although 260s have been randomly found in others. (talking wagons here)

ZD30 has higher PEAK power and torque than TD42T but the 4.2 has a very flat torque curve. Drive them both in haeavy sand if you want to see the huge difference.

Dodgy 5th gear is found in vehicles built between mid 1999 and mid 2001. Nissan have now stopped paying for these to be fixed outside warranty.

The 2.8TD is an honest reliable engine but underpowered for something as heavy as a GU. The fly by wire throttle is too sensitive and makes it a pain to drive offroad. A block of medium density foam under the accelerator pedal can help. 2.8s are ideal for engine & gearbox transplants as they are cheap and have the bonus of coming with 4.6 diff ratios.

2.8TD = .
you get that being ex-toyota...been driving dads 4.5L 80s auto :D

so straight-6 4.2 kick ass for general driving wang factor?
and the 2.8TD is weak as piss.

ill be in the bible for hints on buying a used GU if u need me
